I knew what you meant. My post wasn't a direct response to yours. I actually am worried about talk of attacking Iran. And since this thread was more toward the combining of church and state, I thought both hazards were worth noting.

Good!
I did not think about the ambiguity when I posted.

I think it will take some time to attack Iran. First Iraq must be declared a success so there are troops available to bring freedom to an other people.

I'm kinda disappointed a fundie like Verlch hasn't posted their opinion. I wonder what it is they think they'll achieve by replacing science with religion in our classrooms. Do they even recognize that the power the US has today, both military and economic, and the standard of living that comes with it, is based on a strong tradition of objective scientific research. And if that tradition is turned on it's head by replacing scientific inquiry with biblical pronouncements, we as a nation will begin to decline. They think that our nation is now declining because we believe in evolution, but the fact is quite the opposite.

What happens if they get what they want, evolution is purged from our primary and highschool system, replaced with a religous belief instead?

It would be an enormous loss for USA and the world if the ignorant fools won. The fundamentalists would soon realise they would have to change so much more in society than the science curicullum in high school. They would have to change all education all the way up to university level. They would need to sort out all books on biology, astronomy, cosmology, palaeonthology, genetics, geology, archaeology, etc., to make things consistent. They would need to ban scientific research, since people could actually stumble upon, say, evidence that contradicts their fantasy stories. I'd say it's impossible.

What they can do, is to destroy and ruin the science education for thousands of young students, who then will lack the basic knowledge for going on to studying science at college/university level. If they can't do that, they will still brainwash their own sons and daughters into believing rubbish, they will do what they can to put fear in the minds of impressionable people, and preach as much as they can. Like Hovind and others, they will lie as much as they can about the various fields of science - as they already do, of course.

They can ruin the future for lots of young people who never deserved to be treated in such a horrible way, but I don't think they can destroy enough to bring the entire country into some Dark Age.

"Life is but a momentary glimpse of the wonder of this astonishing universe, and it is sad to see so many dreaming it away on spiritual fantasy." -- Carl Sagan

I agree. I think at most they can confuse a lot of kids in public schools but they couldn't go so far as to re-write science education for the entire nation. If they had that kind of control, the least of our worries would be religion being taught as science in our public schools. People like me would be worrying about being burned at the stake.
