I just had a harddrive crash.
The toasted drive took with it 30+ Gigs of 7000 to 8000 mp3 files.
All mp3 files were sorted, and I had all files' mp3-tags controlled and corrected to include title, album, artist, year, genre, etc.

Now I will have to rip off all my CDs again, and start searching for all those albums I don't have.

I pressent this as undisputable evidence that:

1) There is no God.

or

2) If there is a God, then He's a f***ng sadist.

No, he was just punishing you, like all the victims of the tsunami. You got off lucky, you should be thankful to him.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

The really bitter thing about it is that for the last week, I've been rearranging stuff on all my HDD's to get related things ordered in the same place, just to make it easier to make backups. And then this shit happens.

Well, I guess it could be worse, I have 300 GB of other collected stuff... that have taken long time to collect, mainly because it hasn't been released on DVD. Like "7 Days" and "Space: Above and Beyond" and all seven seasons of "MacGyver".

Perhaps if you had a paper clip, a rubber band and some gum, Mabuse, you could have prevented this tragedy.

Dr. M, I feel for you. Luckily I have about %80 of my mp3 files on cd, but how long did it take to tag 8000 mp3 files? I need to know. I gave that crap up in the first 1000. Man, I have way too many pics to edit to worry about the mp3's.

I presume you know as much as any techie but we had a crash a few months ago and the guy at the repair shop salvaged our files. Best $65.00 I'd spent in a while.

He used his HD to access our files, put them in an "old files" folder and fixed the machine. Everything was in there from programs to files and we just had to go to that folder to get them.

Also, I bought a program to recover lost Word files. It actually worked. The corrupt files only had small pieces that were actually not recoverable. It saved me hours of work as I was rewriting an entire infection control policy for a hospital when the file crashed. I had been saving my work as I went but hadn't backed up the file as I wasn't finished so all the changes I had made in the previous few hours was lost. But then it was found.

If you have a completely text word file and it is corrupt, all you need to do is open the file in notepad, scroll down until you start to find words that make sense. Then copy these into a new word file and save it.

It gets messy when you have tabels and images though.

As soon as power is applied the drive spins up and starts making cyclic clicks and whirrs.
I think it's the head that keeps trying to calibrate itself, then misses and try to recalibrate.
It does not even show up in BIOS, and IBM:s disk-diagnostic tool will not acknowledge the drive as present either. So, it's pretty much screwed, unless someone here knows how to revive it.

Edited to add: It was an IBM (Hitachi) DeskStar. Together with my girlfriend, we've had 3 out of 5 DeskStar drives fail on us. I will never buy such junk again. Seagate has never failed on me.

Maxtor drives have been reliable for me. I have 4 100gb Maxtors (with 8mb cache) set up in a raid-0. Works well.

Also, fyi, I have been seeing adds here in the US for the first season of McGuyver on DVD.
