R.Wreck, my condolences. How horribly embarassing to have Latin say that you had an excellent post, and then to say you have potential. But take heart, my guess is that he misinterpreted your post.

Thanks furshur. I was going to dismiss his comment as just another bit of entertainment from an unbalanced mind, but you've piqued my curiousity. So let's find out.
Yo latin, why did you find my post "excellent"? |

Because you served it up in an omlette?
I must try that. 'Jarl has yet to approve of one of my posts. I fear that my future as a "New Skeptic" is in doubt.

Probably from the RJ Reynolds Menthol Institute. Home of the easy smokes.
Seriously, how claiming that each other is clinically mentally damaged is not forwarding any arguements. It only shows frustration for a position that will not change. Latin due to blind adherence to a position and a need to be condecending to others here. Shacal due to frustration of seeing many posters question latin and get nothing but innuendo and condecending remarks.
Let's retire to neutral corners and take a breather to try to get this back under control. Lord and Lady know I've been guilty of similar frustration and need to step back a bit. |

I don't think there is any argument to forward anymore. It seemed to me that from Latinijrals early posts that he was not here for any meaningful discussion and was content to do his best to irritate regular posters. Whether he is clinically insane or not is for a professional to decide and I think you would need more than a few forum posts as information to work with. I do agree with Sacal to the extent that Latinijral is not mentally stable and in the vernacular could be considered a nut case.
If someone acts in an irrational manner it is impossible to have any meaningful discussion and the most you can hope for is to enjoy the exchange for its amusement value. I admire the patience of the regulars who post here but whilst not politically correct sometimes the best course of action in dealing with characters like latinijral is to poke them with a verbal stick and laugh at their antics.

I think if the situation is an irritant to you then this is the best course of action. Unfortunately the internet is full of loony toons and wackos of all varieties and latinijral is simply the latest to grace the door at SFN. I think the best approach is laughter and I wouldn't take the behaviour of latinijral too seriously. Filthy in particular seems to have the right idea when dealing with irrational blather. He has a great turn of phrase and his posts are very amusing at times.

Aw shucks, 'tain't nothin'. :scuffing feet:
You're right of course. If you take these guys too seriously, beyond a reasonable point, you risk losing your own perspective in the opposit direction.
Our single-minded friend is rapidly becoming an amusing toy, I fear. A pity really, because I'd like to see his opinions of topics other than the Randi futility.

You are the one who is thinking Shacal is clinically mentally damaged. I thought he was pretending to be psychiatrist from some Mental Institute, since he was using the same stupid tactic from the old scepticism.
This topic about Geller really put you all in evidence of your fear to hold an argument. Was so difficult for you to think about the simple questions about URI? Even your ghosts of Randi and Carlos appeared here.

The guy is a troll.
He's only here to get a rise out of people.
Just make fun of him, ridicule his moronic statements, flay out his pathetic attempts at argument and logic, and leave amused.
They guy refuses to answer simple questions asked of him. That should be the first (and only needed) indication that he is just trying to deliberately provoke people.

See? Just read that. He's strawman-ing away like a pro. He may not even realize it. But it is ever so clear that he is (if it's possible) MORE mentally dense than verlch!
He needs to answer the questions asked of him.
What is, exactly, the "new skepticism", and what qualifies you to be its father latin?
Answer!

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't find it difficult at all; and the Randi/Carlos connection became ancient history with the recent closing of the latest thread. Let us speak of it no more.
Geller(web site): what about him? Any compentent stage magician can reproduce his act without breaking a sweat. Geller(biography) folds under pressure as demonstrated by his failures when presented with an object he hasn't previously handled or is being carefully monitored. He makes outrageous claims, such as the one about the 2,000 Oylimpic Globe's failed decent. Some years ago, a soccer team he was involved with had the worst season in it's history -- whence the supernatural powers, eh?
He's been caught in the act, as it were, on occasions such as this one, showing himself to be a sometimes clumsy magician as well as a fraud. quote: Massimo Polidoro, one of the founders of CICAP (the Italian Committee for the Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal)* and an expert in psychic-deception, found the tape. ''I was researching material for my book Mysteries'', Polidoro explains, ''when I found the recording of an episode from a few years back (March 18, 1989) of 'Alla ricerca dell'arca' (Search for the Ark), a tv show then airing on RAI3. Guest on this episode was Uri Geller who, as usual, demonstrated his claimed powers by bending a key and moving the hands of a watch ''with his mind'', as he said. However, if one looks carefully to the recording of the show one can catch various clues that show how Geller did really perform the demonstrations: for example, Geller can be seen taking out the stem of the watch to move its hands, myabe thinking that the move went unnoticed''.
It's the first time that Geller, who has always stated that he has never used any trickery, is so clearly caught red-handed on tape. It's surprising, however, that nobody had ever noticed before this damning evidence. "This, instead, shouldn't come as a surprise", Polidoro explains. "At Padua's University we have conducted experiments which demonstrate this precise fact: it is not possible for somebody to catch a trick behind a claimed psychic demonstration if he has no specific training in how tricks of this kind work. It's not a question of intelligence but, as I say, of knowledge. In fact, it has happened many times that scientists have been duped by psychics or mediums just because they couldn't figure out their tricks. In the Geller tape, for example, it is not so obvious how he bends the key or moves the hands of the watch, but a trained eye can catch the crucial moments where he appears to use a second key to bend the first one and where he pops out the stem of the watch to move the hands of it with a finger".
He also seems to have taken up losing lawsuits as an amusing diversion from the toil and tedium of gulling the gullible.
Ok, safely back on topic. Do you have a 'new' skeptic's problem with this? If so, please bring it forth for discussion. Do go into detail with all suitable reference.

You really don't sweat that comprehension thing, do you?
Had you bothered to read my post for context, it would have been clear that the meaning that I got from the exchange of posts (hence the "claiming" part of it) was that Shacal and you were questioning each others mental accuity. Shacal was more direct. You, so I thought, were by asking which mental institution Shacal was from. As clinical psychologists in the US mostly have private offices or work for major hospitals psychiatric wards, your reference to mental health institutions seemed to indicate that you thought Shacal was an inmate, not on the professional staff. You have made it clear in your follow up that it is not the case.
Still, it does not change the context in which my quote exists which makes no judgement call on the mental health status of either of you. I believe you would be best served by some more English classes where they teach context. |

No, no, no! Not until we find out all about how New Skepticisming is done.
Besides, I prefer the long, slow method; that of grinding the fucker down with ponderous evidence and irrefutable facts at every turn, coupled with the odd, snide remark and some smart-assed questions. It's more fun that way, and in the process, you pass along a little info and indeed, gain a little.
And if looked at from my own, vicious point of view, it prolongs the agony.
I really don't think that this guy is worth setting a president over.
