What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Here's another attempt. I found the thread with a search for "evolution and Terri Schiavo".

Topic: Charles Darwin Killed Terri Schiavo

quote:
Ken H: Our culture reaps what it sows -

Adam and Eve didn't teach people that they were evolved from animals.

Those that teach evolution have clearly fallen for a lie of the serpent(Satan).

We have the seen the results of teaching evolution this week in the killing of Terri Schiavo.

If Adam and Eve had not sinned, then sin would not be on this earth.

P_Barnes: I think Daisy is saying that: Eve sinned, this allowed Darwinism to enter the world, Darwinism is directly responsible for Terry Schiavo's death, therefore Eve bears some responsibility for Terry's death. Something like that?

Phillip: I think KenH has a point in that the culture of "death" regarding humans is less than what it has ever been and a major part of that IS due to the loss of "Adam and Eve" being truly created from the ground and from the rib. Human life becomes less important. Why are we killing thousands of babies? It certainly isn't because we value their life?

Here is (apparently) the article that prompted the BaptistBoard thread. It includes gems like this:
Next, I have titled this short entry "Charles Darwin Killed Terri Schiavo" simply to make one point: when culture as a whole embraces the idea that man is merely an animal, the random result of the chance toss of the cosmic die, a purposeless biological accident without any meaningful superiority to an ape, a dog, or a microbe, no firm basis can be provided for a culture of compassion and life.

Uh-huh. And might I presume that they can come up with solid evidence that Homo sapiens is anything but another member of the planet's biological community?

No, you say? None at all, you say? Not even a smidge?

Humph. Don't that pour piss all in yer Cheerios.

This whole thing just seems so terribly depressing. Aside from the inability of a lot of people to conceive of behaving in some sort of civilized manner without a father figure waiting to punish them at any false move.

With the usual caveat that I am not an evolutionary theorist, to totally ignore the conservative and cooperative aspects of evolution and focus entirely on the competitive aspects seems intellectual dishonesty of a high order. That Schiavo was preserved some 15 years as a totally nonproductive member of society doesn't count, I guess.

Social species MUST develop something akin to an ethical structure to survive as a society, even in evolutionary terms. Seems plain as a pikestaff to me, anyway.

It seems pretty obvious to me too. Not the the creationists and other such fundies.

It's probably partially due to that they believe that shit, and partially due to the fact that the asinine idea of "whithout god, there's no basis for morality" is an excellent way to demonize non-believers.
