After cruising this board for a couple of months, I think I have a pretty good idea what kind of light reading most of the poster are in to.
Sad news, folks. Everyone grab your towel and have a moment of silence. Yesterday, author, skeptic, and all-around great guy Douglas Adams passed away from a heart attack. He was 49.
With sympathies to his family...

Yes, I read that. I was really surprised. He was so young : (

I regret I never got to hear him speak. I've heard he was funny and wise at the same time.
Besides, in "Bad Omens", he's explained how I ended up with two copies of Queens Greatest Hits. I no longer leave CD's or tapes in my glovebox for more than a fortnight!

I hope that wherever he has gone that he took a towel with him.

I remember in the seventh grade when I discoved "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". I so loved it that I couldn't wait to do my oral book report on it. Pretty scary. Mr. Adams will be sorely missed.

quote:
The argument goes something like this: "I refuse to prove that I exist,"
says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
"But," says Man, "the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could
not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by
your own arguments, you don't. QED."
"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in
a puff of logic.
"Oh, that was easy," says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that
black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Lisa, but Adams didn't write Bad Omens. I seem to remember it was Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

We can always hope that Douglas is merely spending a year dead for tax purposes.

The *GREAT* seem to die young. For instance, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (at 35) and Felix Mendelssohn (at 38) both died very young. They were child prodigies. But what music they composed has lived for centuries and is still going strong.

Nice thought Ljbrs; think I'll put some Mozart on right now.
Something else, the staying power of the great masters.

Yeah, that does tend to clean up any difficulties of that nature.
