This was an interesting article. The thing is, the last time a Bush said something like this, thousands of Kurds were gassed when the US didn't follow through...

I'm going to disagree with that about the Kurds getting gassed. The Kurds gassed in Balajra (? I think that was the name) was in 1988 and had nothing to do with the encouragement for destabalizing Hussein in 1991. In 1991 ~1.5 million Kurds fled to Turkey and ~600,000 to Iraq following Husseins attack.

Yes Trish you were right they were not gassed on that occasion they where attacked by Iraqui helicopters which Sadam Hussein though was OK because they were not fixed wing aircraft.

OK, sorry about the gassed part but dead is, as far as I can tell, dead. I was horrified by Bush Sr. when he turned his back on them that way. You can't ask someone to do something like that and promise support then not give it.

There's a long history of Kurdish attempts for their own country of Kurdistan but they've all fallen apart.

Rather than fighting the Kurds fled. Am unsure about whether the US failed in their agreement to back the Kurds or no. Would like to look at it more.
