wow, are there any pictures anywhere of the mother or the calf? for some reason freaky hybrids are fascinating, know of any more unusual ones? Weirest one i heard of was a goat/sheep chimera. Mainly because of the differing number of chromosones, it should be impossible |

My avatar is a photo of a hybrid, Bitis gabonica rhinocerous X Bitis nasicornis, western gaboon and rhinocerous vipers, that is eating me out of house and home.
Not common, but not too unusual, really. There are cross genera hybrids such as timber rattlesnake (Croalus horridus) and massasugas (Sisturus c. catenatus). I have found one of these in the field, and a vile-tempered little stinker it was, too! As read, this one was bred in captivity.
In any event, hybrids only seldom continue on to breed. With the snake, the hybrid doesn't 'smell' right to either species, and the social structure of dolphins and whales would prevent with this animal. Birds such as sage grouse, which intergrade fairly often, don't have the right 'dance' or call to attract mates on any regular basis. Checks and balances, eh?
On the other hand, Hybridization is another way that evolution works toward speciation, but again, it takes a lot of time and not a little luck for a hybrid to become it's own species.

Oh, interesting! Though I've always thought killer whales (especially false) are really closer to dolphins than whales (I remember reading about it somewhere). Still impressive!
As for hybrids; horse x zebra hybrids aren't that rare, neither are lion x tiger hybrids. |

hmm yeah, maybe if they forced these things and produced sufficient numbers, there could be some mating between the hybrids (providing they arent sterile) rather than between pure breeds and hybrids. might sound a little like dr moreaux or something but why dont they just artificially inseminate a ton of animals with sperm from different species, just to see what kind of hideous crimes against nature are produced? I'd be interested to see. They do the same thing with flowers and no one says thats cruel!
I can think of some fruit hybrids that go on to reproduce. For example the small oranges, can never remember which one (mandarin clementine or satsuma or tangerine) and ugly fruit, which is a cross between a pomelo and something.

You assume (falsely) that nature has a criminal justice system... |

Horses have 64 chromosomes, and donkeys have 62, but they make hybrid mules and hinnies just fine.
On another subject, there are technical problems with the article linked in the OP. Compare and contrastPark researchers suspect the wholphin's father is a 15-foot long Atlantic bottlenose dolphin named Mikioi. withAtlantic bottlenose dolphins reach a maximum size of 12 feet and can weigh up to 700 pounds. There seems to be a disconnect, there. Bad editor! No bonus!
Hmmm...
Most others seem to be repeating the "12 feet, 1,400 lbs" mantra. How did daddy get to 15 feet in length? |

Possibly a hybrid himself? Maybe he was zapped with x-rays [grin]? An anomaly? |

Bah! Animal sizes are almost always exaggerated, even by people who should be expected to be above it. Something about newspapers inspires that sort of thing. I'll believe the sizes when I do the measure/weighing myself, or read of it in a proper journal.

looks like i'm not the only one who's obsessed with playing god and creating freaks of nature. Look at the lengths these guys went to to try and make a rat-mouse hybrid!
That wouldn't even make anything particularly interesting or hideous! |
