I won't be giving MO any of my time either, because they are a part of the larger problem.

It may be more practical to support them until (if ever) the rules change to prevent the soft money, but I can't bring myself to lend a hand to any organization that encourages this activity.

Despite my agreement with MO on many issues.

Ah well… I must now regard myself with some contempt again. I have been forced to make decisions like this all of my life. In the case of politics, every once in a while it would really be nice if my choice was more clear-cut…

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Got any better ideas, Dude? I'm a bit worried about the sudden slide of democracy. Religious groups moving into positions from school boards to monopoly moves for all three branches of government, the anti-communist group back in the white house with a new excuse for unethical acts against the common folk, possible election fraud that is easier when > half the country sits home on election day....and so on. I hear your objections. What are your alternatives?

I wasn't going to answer this, because it seems that people are taking my criticism of a corrupt system personally.

And because, holy crap, I thought I had said pretty clearly how I think we can start fixing the problem!

Change the rules to eliminate unlimited money. Make it so that the 527's and their cousins, and ALL PACs, have a hard-cap on the ammount of money a single person can contribute, and make that cap as low (or lower) than the single person contribution limit to campaigns.

We should also consider lowering the campaign contribution cap by about half.

Imagine an election where the candidates are judged by their merits and positions on issues, instead of the 6 second sound-byte smear ads. Just for starters.

Dude, read "Fixing Campaign Finance," and look up some of the other articles on this bill. What started out as an apparently-serious attempt to limit 527s is being ruined by both Democrats and Republicans (all of whom, of course, are placing blame on the other side of the aisle).

Yeah, it isn't the first time that the 527 problem has been examined. McCaine/Feingold sponsored a campaign finance reform a few years back, but it was gutted to keep the unlimited soft-money legal.
