As unbelievable as it sounds, it's true.

quote:
The Rev. Chan Chandler of East Waynesville Baptist Church in Waynesville ex-communicated nine members who refuse to support President Bush, according to WLOS-TV in Asheville, N.C.

Another 40 have left in protest.

Even more amazing, in my view, is that is too much even for the Rapture Ready crew!

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

I would agree with one of the RR posters - "Say good-bye to that church's tax exempt status." - except that from what I've heard, no church has ever lost tax-exempt status for getting involved in politics. While it's a clear violation of the law, the IRS has never (so far as I know) stripped anyone of the tax exemption.

Maybe they will, now. This violation is so egregious that something needs to happen.

Oh good, and here I was, thinking the RR people were completely deluded fools. It turns out they're slightly less crazy than that. Very slightly.

They interviewed a church member on Air America. It was an elderly woman who had been a member of the church for >40 years. The new pastor who instigated the 'policy' had been there 2 years. The woman left the church after speaking out against the outrage to the church administrators who must have been part of the pastor's group. It was really sad.

It also reminded me of the Rajaneeshies in Oregon who also moved into the local church in overwhelming numbers, elected themselves to the church board and took control of the church coffers and gave it to their group.

I don't see this church losing their tax status, at least not right this very minute. It might well lose it's congregation and replace it with yet another batch of drooling, off-the-deep-end, loonies, if it hasn't just now done so. I wonder just how many of the remaining members are also Klansmen.
