What the hell? doesn't 1 in 30 sound rather large? How come I've never met a single one? I understand its meant to be secret but plenty of people can't keep a secret to save their lives. To be honest I'd be interested to know what its all about other than getting a shoe in for certain jobs.
also from this site http://www.tlio.demon.co.uk/masons.htm
quote: New recruits are drummed up by existing masons '...it might be a good idea to join...' but the choice of whether to actually apply or not is up to the individual. So what does that decision say about a person? Anyone who approaches the masons in order to join will probably be encouraged by the prospect of gaining social positions by the back door. In other words the initiate has the fundamental ingredient of a cheat who is prepared to go behind the public's back because he lacks confidence, self-belief or integrity. Masons are men who fight shy of free and open discussion. The usual reason for men joining is to take up the masons' unofficial promise to further one's career.
I have not, and do not know of anyone who's ever been approached to join the freemasons. Seems like if this were the case it would be rather hard to keep your membership a secret.
Do you have to be white to be a freemason?

Well, according to this site, there are "approximately 5 million Masons worldwide, including 2 million in the United States. The Grand Lodge of California has nearly 90,000 members and about 400 lodges throughout the state." If you figure that there are ca. 140 million men in the US, and of those, maybe 115 million are over 18, then 1 in 30 gives you about 3.8 million Masons. So the website I quoted is off by a bit-- more like 1 in 57 men are Masons. But who knows if the site I mentioned is correct, or includes all branches of Masonry. Perhaps verlch can clue us in to the real facts... |

The trusty CIA World Factbook has all the answers. For the UK, it looks like there are about 24 million males 15+, so say there are about 22 million males 18+ (there are 5.5 million ages 0-14, or about 400,000 per year, so from 15-18, say ca. 2 million or so total...) and you've got a rought estimate. |

Round these parts, they really don't keep their membership a secret. You can't swing a cat without hitting one. Heck, my grandfather and a significant number of my wife's ancestors were Freemasons.
You don't have to be a particular color, but you do have to believe in a supreme being to be one. |

well if 22m is the case 1 in 30 is about accurate. even more than the states, but apparently more secretive...or maybe just no one likes me...hey is that why the room always goes quiet when i walk in???
Whatt about these sites like freemason watch ( or something) that are convinced the masons are into paganism? Seems hard to believe that such a high proportion of people are in cahootz with satan himself. Or maybe these weird religious goings on are restricted to the upper echelons and the lower members are merely normal guys with funny rings. The highest ranking UK mason is the duke of kent interestingly enough |
