Usually I go to the active topics page to scan the new stuff; there are some threads that show updated but the messages don't appear. Seems random. Right now, in the "Do aliens exist" thread, the last message I see is from Hat Monster on 9-22 but the active topics page shows updates since then. Ideas?

This is due to a very minor bug in the "poll" software. Everytime somebody votes, it renews the topic at that time, crediting the most recent message to whomever actually posted last.

Indeed, now that I look it seems that all the bumped threads are poll threads. Thanks Boron.
