Research conducted in Sweden indicates a biological link to male homosexuality: Gay men who are subjected to male pheromones have hypothalamus-reactions similar to women.
http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/abstract/0407998102v1
quote: These findings show that our brain reacts differently to the two putative pheromones compared with common odors, and suggest a link between sexual orientation and hypothalamic neuronal processes.

Saw that.
Betting the fundies will either ignore it or just dismiss it because it was done in Sweden where everyone is gay anyway. Just more evidence that Sweden is satan's home on earth.

Any actual evidence that demonstrates a biological component to sexual orientation/gender identity is not going to be well recieved by our resident political/religious leaders homophobes.

Ain't that the sad truth?
The report in The Local had the researcher saying that even though the number of test subjects were small, the result was conclusive. It demonstrated a biological component to sexual orientation. And I think it's important to stress that sexual orientation is different from gender assignment. A homosexual man does not have to be a female mind in a man's body. |

Well, reading through that thread, I suppose that this comment sums it up pretty well:
quote: I don't think the findings are worthy of note. Homosexuality is a sin. There is no "biological involvement" in someone being gay. Someone is gay because their heart is dark and sick (Jeremiah 17:9). I don't care what research out there says...the Bible is the ultimate source.
Emphasis mine. Some of them aren't completely dupes, but others are so backwards it's staggering, how they even manage to function in society is a mystery to me. |

They do function in the society, and they vote, own guns and raise children. Enough to make anyone optimistic about the future.
One of the most chilling threads on that board was one where one of them heard some train whistle and honestly thought it might be the heavenly trumpets and that the rapture was imminent. For several seconds he/she thought it was the rapture. The actual rapture. That's when I realised that these people actually believe that crap. Amazing. Truly amazing. |

Sure it will be well-received... just secretly.
Someday, the question "how many politicians who sponsored anti-gay legislation were themselves gay?" will be answered. Former Washington State Senate Leader Jim West is the most recent positive example. |

I still want to know who Jeff Gannon was seeing during his after hours visits at the Whitehouse. You KNOW the guy had to have a friend or two in high places to get into the Whitehouse with a fake name.

Still, I don't think homosexuality is a purely genetic condition. I would agree that there is a certain genetic proneness to it, but there can be emotional reasons for becoming homosexual too. Some of the lesbians I know seem to be as such because of successive BAD relationships with men. Just got sick of men but didn't want to be lonely sort of thing. |

There is statistical evidence that suggests homosexuality is heritable, and the OP of this thread is describing evidence that suggests the brain has gender and it doesn't always have the same gender as the rest of the body.

Right. I'll agree, but surely you wouldn't say that everyone who is homosexual has that condition? Isn't that falling into the same catagory as the whole false memory syndrome thing? |

Structural and biological differences don't (as far as I know) have anything to do with false memory.
But yes, I don't think every homosexual person demostrates opposite gender brains. Its probably mush more complicated than any single (or even handfull) of causes.
My statement was meant to say only that there is growing evidence that homosexuality is, to some extent, biological.

All complex behavioral traits that I am aware of, have both a genetic and environmental influence. Environmental influences include everything from the time of conception to the present that has ever affected the individual. Thus the phenotype of any such trait for any individual is a mixture of genetic and environmental effects. The whole nature vs. nature debate isn't whether its all nature or all nuture, but to what degree is it nature and what degree is it nuture. Nature being genetic and nuture being environmental. |
