DENVER May 17, 2005 — Ross Hopkins still likes to drink Bud, even though he says a brief tryst with a Coors beer cost him his job at a Budweiser distributor.

Hopkins, 41, is suing American Eagle Distributing Co., saying the company wrongly fired him for drinking Coors in a bar two years ago.

"They flat-out told me 'We're putting food on your table so you could put it on theirs?'" he said Tuesday. "I thought I could drink it, no problem."

I don't know what the big deal is. Either brand is barely comparable to hog swill.

I guess the message here is; don't hang out with the company's shareholders or their kin.

Hopkins, who was a warehouse supervisor for the distributor, said he was not wearing a uniform or representing American Eagle when he was at the bar in May 2003 with some co-workers. He said he had ordered a Budweiser but a waitress brought Coors. He decided to drink it because he didn't want to wait.

The son-in-law of the distributor's majority shareholder also was at the bar, and offered twice to buy him a Budweiser, but Hopkins turned it down both times.

He was fired the following Monday.

I can understand not wanting to wait for a beer at a bar. But when the son-in-law of the head honcho asks more than once if you'd like to switch to the company brand-- on his tab, no less-- then you'd be a fool not to get the hint and take the offer!

Yeah, that's a way of looking at it. However, the guy was in street cloths and on his own time, if the story is telling it straight, therefore it's none of anyone else's business where and what he drinks as long as he doesn't puke on someone's shoes other than his own.

Me, I think that, as the son-in-law couldn't leave well enough alone after a polite refusal (one assumes courtesy), a trip outside to discuss the matter would have been more than sufficient. Must be he's a Republican.

In any event, it's a lot of hassle over small (and shitty) beer.

If Coors have any brains they'll offer him a major job and use him in an advetising campaign, something along the lines of "Even our competitors prefer our beer"

Fishing is based on a lie, an easy safe meal.
Instead it results in a hook ripping through your mouth and being hauled out of your natural environment to suffer a slow torture, whether you live or die.

Why, then, is being a fisher looked on as being a good character trait?

Indeed! And mayhaps that's what could happen. Someone correct me if I'm wrong (read: too lazy to look it up), but I think that Coors is Colorado based, so it might not be a big move for him, distance-wise, at least.

In Sweden, the sacked guy could sue his ex-employer for this action. Employers may not sack people for such frivolous reasons.
