So, is it then also morally wrong to take the tax dollars of millions of anti-pre-emptive war Americans and spend them on invading Iraq?

Well, if you are logically consistent it is.

Stupid vote-pandering motherfuckers.

The bill will likely pass, if it comes to a vote. W will probably break out the VETO for the first time in his presidency.

These Conservatives are going to set medical research in this country back 20 years. Honestly, on every single issue, from the economy to foreign relations to the environment to soc. sec. to science, it's like they wake up and ask themselves, "How can I fuck up the country for the long haul?"

Bush urges the House to vote against the bill, but he'll veto it anyway if it passes.

Delay proves that he is an idiot, again:
quote:
DeLay, a Texas Republican, called the debate “a necessary and important step in our national conversation about the kind of people we will be, in a world of ever more promising and ever more unnerving medical technology.” He equated reducing the funding restrictions imposed by Bush to a “vote to fund with taxpayer dollars the dismemberment of living, distinct human beings for the purposes of medical experimentation.”

(emphasis mine)

So... I guess that it doesn't even enter his vacuous head that if creating new lines of human embryonic stem cells is murder, then the discarding of stored embryos must also be murder.

Where is the outrage? When will he be sponsoring that bill to BAN in-vitro fertilization?

"unnerving medical technology?" "Dismemberment of living, distinct human beings?"

What a terrifying place the modern world is! Threats to God's will lurk everywhere, especially in the medical profession, where live babies are dismembered before your very eyes! Yes, folks, this is happening in God's country, thanks to the godless liberals.

/sarcasm off

Sheer nuttery. I'm far more frightened about contracting Parkinson's or Alzheimer's than I am frightened of the technology that may help cure those diseases.

How dare they demand their ideology trump the suffering of millions? How arrogant, foolish, and narcissistic.

Just heard on the news that Delay renewed his exterminator's license. Yes, he is a licensed exterminator. At least he will have something to do once he is finally excised from the government.

House Votes to Reverse Ban on Funding for Stem Cell Research
By DAVID STOUT
and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS
WASHINGTON, May 24 - The House of Representatives voted today to ease restrictions on federal financing for embryonic stem cell research, thus setting up a showdown with President Bush, who has vowed to veto the measure because he says it would promote destruction of life.

The 238-to-194 vote in favor, far short of the 290 needed to override a presidential veto, sends the issue to the Senate, where an identical measure is pending. Stem cell research has considerable support in the Senate as well. Its chief sponsor is Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, who heads the Senate subcommittee that controls federal financing for medical research.

Fifty House Republicans broke with President Bush to vote with 187 Democrats and the chamber's sole independent, Bernard Sanders of Vermont, in favor of the bill. Fourteen Democrats joined 180 Republicans in voting against it. The House's action, and the likelihood of approval in the Senate as well, sets the stage for the first veto to be cast by President Bush, who reiterated his opposition this afternoon to the current legislation.

What with the fillibuster deal and all, I am beginning to wonder if at least some members of Congress are gearing up for a fight with the White House and it's stooges. If so, it's about time.

I saw on the news one of bush's main points is that these embryos can be frozen and adopted. Then he brought out some of these 'snowflake' children or whatever...

Is it really possible that every unused embryo can be frozen and adopted? There must be millions of em.

Extremely unlikely.

A thing to note also, is that the in-vitro fertilization is kinda like a shotgun method. They implant a handfull of these embryos and hope that one or two will stick.

So really, if you are against using the things for research based on the idea that each one is a human life... then how totally wrong is it to waste several in an attempt to get just one to be born?

We can't even get all the real living children in this country adopted, the idea that we could adopt out these frozen embryos is ridiculous.

Of course not. Bush is a cretin for even thinkiong it.

This bill, if it gets all the way through, poses something of a problem for the administration. It has a lot of popular support and a veto would not make those people happy. On the other have, to sign it would send the religious right, his mainstay of support, ballistic.

He will, of course, choose to piss off the people who send him the least money, as he has already stated.

I couldn't believe the "dismemberment" statement. Unbelievable!

These guys are mental midgets. They have no capacity to change once a belief is established in their minds. Once you go down the anti-abortion path and start calling embryos 'people' you are stuck when faced with the reality they are not.

Of course not only is there the hypocrisy of spending my tax dollars on killing real 'people' in a war I don't approve of, there is also the hypocrisy that a 2/3 majority for appeals court judges is wrong yet it is right in this case for the President to over ride the majority thus requiring a 2/3 majority to pass the bill.

I was listening to an NPR show on this subject a few weeks back, and one speaker (an ethicist, I believe) said that he often invites people to sit down and draw an embryo. He said almost invariably they end up drawing a fetus.

Couple that with Bush's unfortunate choice of the word "dismemberment," which literally means to remove the limbs of, and I have strong doubts whether Bush even knows what an embryo is. Either that or he's more than willing to perpetuate the misconception.

According to someone on NPR this morning, the high estimate of the number of frozen embryos in the U.S. is around 400,000.

Stem Cell Research Living Will

I hereby certify that neither I, nor any member of my family, including but not limited to: children, grandchildren, cats, dogs, etc. and any "after acquired" family will never, ever, under any circumstances (even with my fingers crossed) take or ingest any form of drug treatment or medical breakthroughs that are in any way associated with or connected to Stem Cell research. I am morally opposed to this type of medical malfeasance that our lord and Savior and Dr. Dobson most assuredly rebuke. I declare that I am of sound mind and body (as so it is hence with respect to the aforementioned family members) as we execute this irrevocable document and thusly said, this document shall not be challenged in a court of law. This is so despite the fact that I or said parties, would either now or in the future, be the beneficial recipient of such a repugnant life enhancing treatment . Only the Devil's greatest tool, i.e. "temptation" could lead us into sinful thoughts of partaking of this reprehensible policy.
