Today's New York Times editorial notes that a bill has been introduced into Congress that quote: would create nonpartisan redistricting commissions in every state. The commissions would be prohibited from taking the voters' party affiliations or voting history into account when drawing lines. Instead, the bill would emphasize continuity of counties, municipalities and neighborhoods. The bill would also limit Congressional redistricting to once every 10 years.
This, all in an attempt to stop the Tom Delay-like moves to gerrymander districts in one party's favor as often as possible.
If you're sick of extremists (from both sides!) running the show, and wish that elections in your district were actually competative, then you should be in favor of this. Thus, I urge you to WRITE YOUR REPRESENTATIVE to let her or him know that you want this to happen. Go to http://www.house.gov to find your representative and start writing.
Remember, few people ever actually write their Representative, so every letter and email you send is very important. If you want a return to the Middle in American politics, the only way it's going to happen (or perhaps, one way to get it started...) is through this bill.
