What a change six hours makes:
In a statement issued later, Watergate reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein said, "W. Mark Felt was 'Deep Throat' and helped us immeasurably in our Watergate coverage..."
'Cause while listening to All Things Considered tonight during my commute, NPR was reporting that Woodward and Bernstein were still maintaining their "we're not gonna tell until Deep Throat is dead" position of the past 30-odd years. I wonder what changed their minds this evening.

Maybe they talked to the guy.... if he wanted to reveal the secret before he died, then they no longer had any reason to keep it quiet.

I saw an article in the Post that talked about the Vanity Fair article earlier today as well, they said Woodward and Bernstein were still going to remain quiet.

We can all look forward to the full story now, as I'm sure all they have to do at this point is send the manuscript to the publisher.

Betting they get a NICE payday outta this one.

Where is George W. Bush's "Deep Throat"?

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

I've read that Jeff Gannon/Guckert might be able to shed some light on it.

Or not. I got that from an anti-Bush rant that was even more vitriolic than most of mine.

I vaguely remember hearing of Felt, but had no idea that he was involved in much of anything beyond his job. My best guess was a mid-level gopher attached to someone in Nixon's cabinet that had perhaps conversational access to what was going on.

In any event, it's all moot now. But it's good that curiosity is finally satisfied.

I watched Chris Matthews show last night on MSNBC. He had on a panel including Nixon's speechwriter and out second favorite fundie, Pat Robertson. About 7 minutes into a 10 minute segment, Robertson calls Felt a snake and blames him for the loss in Vietnam.

To Matthews credit, he did challenge Robertson on this absurd claim just a vehemently as I did. (Got yelled at by the missus for saying "What a load of bullshit" in a loud voice, too. Something about using my "indoor" voice and personal injury if I woke the baby up.)

They also had on J. Gordon Liddy. He says that Felt was not in a position to reveal everything that came out. That "Deep Throat" is more than one source. Felt was one of a few. He only had access to some documents concerning the coverup as #2 man at the FBI. Such as the CIA telling the FBI to shut down their investigation of the Watergate break in as it was threatening national security.

From this article:
quote:
Yesterday morning, Vanity Fair released an article by a California lawyer named John D. O'Connor, who was enlisted by Felt's daughter, Joan Felt, to help coax her father into admitting his role in history. O'Connor's article quoted a number of Felt's friends and family members saying that he had shared his secret with them, and it went on to say that Felt told the author -- under the shield of attorney-client privilege -- "I'm the guy they used to call Deep Throat."

and also:

quote:
Woodward and others at The Post were caught by surprise. Woodward had known that family members were considering going public; in fact, they had talked repeatedly with Woodward about the possibility of jointly writing a book to reveal the news. An e-mail from Felt's daughter over the Memorial Day weekend continued to hold out the idea that Woodward and Felt would disclose the secret together.

Bush's 'Deep Throats' are labeled as enemy combatants and kidnapped whilst vacationing abroad so they may be secretly sent to Egypt for aggressive interviewing on private corporate jets actually run by the CIA.

Five years ago I would have called someone a nut for that type of statement. Now Im on board.
