There are no dry sections of Oak Park, least of all in and around OPRF.
Then they must have repealed it after 1993 when a friend of mine attempted to purchase beer at a Walgreens and Robinson's Ribs. |

You are, of course, correct. Permit me to smack myself in the forehead. It's been a long extended weekend. |

Plenty of dry spots in NC, as I'm sure there are in most states.
Back when I was a kid, the county in GA (DeKalb) I lived in was dry. Neighboring Fulton County was wet -- guess which county the bootleggers ran....
Got it on the first try, hah? I knew y'all was smart!
As the dope peddlers love our drug laws, so do the moonshiners and bootleggers love high liquor taxes and prohibiions. It keeps the profits high.
When NY raised the cigarette taxes to out-of-sight levels a couple of decades back, truckloads of coffin-nails began rolling out of NC and elsewhere, bound for the Big Apple, and damned few were caught, although many were hijacked.
The long and short of it is that you will never stamp out anything by prohibiting it or making it economicly hurtful. Someone will always get around it, and further will enjoy a certain, popular support while doing it. Puttin' it to The Man has been an American, tradition since colonial times and I've no doubt that it will continue until, lo, life on the earth ceases to draw breath.
Further, I have no doubt that this is and has been going on everywhere.
If I were to be before this judge and he made the offer, I'd happily lie through my hangover and choose the services. What the hell, I don't have to listen; just be there. Beats jail....

Plenty in Alabama too (surprise!) - but I live in Mobile, which is a small city so we are allowed to purcahse up until 2:00am saturday, then resume 12:00pm sunday (I guess this forces otherwise drinkers to go to church?!?) |

Hi all. I'm new here, but I've been lurking for a bit and think I have found my new home. I'll introduce myself by nitpicking on ValiantDancer a bit with the observation that Jack Daniel's is distilled in Lynchburg, Tennessee - not Kentucky. Lynchburg is however located in a dry county, one of many in that part of the country, which is also rampant with moonshiners (bless their hearts).
What exactly does this observation have to do with church/state issues? Not a thing. But all the good topics were taken this week.
Anyway, greetings to everyone...

Yeah, not a hell of a lot. But topics tend to wander a bit around here, anyway -- short attention spans or something, I dunno....
Welcome to Skeptic Friends Bedlam, bluemax; greetings back at ya! Looking forward to your input.

Jack Daniels is made in Tennessee, not Kentucky. You are correct, though, that Lynchburg, TN. is in a dry county. |

Good grief, Valiant Dancer, that's what 3 or 4 people who have corrected the Kentucky/Tennessee thing? You might consider editing that post. |

Done. It was a silly error. Good to see folks here are ready to refute wrong information. |

Sorry we all jumped on your head, Valiant Dancer. It really wasn't that big a deal. In Kentucky, whiskey is bourbon, so a Kentuckian knows sour mash whiskey has to be from somewhere else.
To get things back on track, here are a couple of links to recent articles in the London Sentinel-Echo:
Official reaction to alternative sentencing positive

Church as punishment not new

"If an offender pleads guilty to their crime, they are provided the option of spending time behind bars; undergoing drug or alcohol evaluation and, if appropriate, treatment at a counseling facility; or attending 10 worship services over a three-month time span."
OK. As a Wiccan, If I attend all religious ceremonies within a 3 month period, I attend 7-8 ceremonies. (2-3 moons per month and one festival) And God forbid that the moon and festival be combined (as they will the 21st for the Full moon and the festival of Litha).
Seems to have a definate mainstream religion bent to it. |
