Ok, I read this article and thought the circumstances of the story would make a good mystery for the folks at SFN to sharpen their detective skills on. I'll just give you the main facts of the case. See if you can divine the cause.
Shortly before 6 o'clock AM, an Alaska woman was awoken by the a tremendous noise somewhere in her home. When she reached the living room she found glass from one end of the room to the other. "There was this huge fish carcass right where my dog usually slept," she said. "It didn't have a head. It was at least two feet long — just the back bone and the tail."
So the question is, "How did the fish get there?" There is one more clue, but I'm purposely leaving it out because otherwise it would be a dead giveaway. Look here to read the original article and answer.

I'd say that God done it, but hurling fishs is not really his style.
A through-the-window gift from an admirer, perhaps? I dunno -- have to give it a little more thought.

A person caught the fish and killed it via decapitation, but they only owned a yugo, so they tried to tie it to the roof of the car. As they drove by this house, they took a curve at too high a speed. The fish slipped out and sailed into window of the house.

Yes, this is tough for me as I know the answer. I believe one could reach the answer just from the details I provided, or a vague approximation, but it does require a little creative thinking.
I'll give one additional clue. This fish was a meal.
Edit: Damn, what's the forum code for hidden text again? I don't see it listed under "Forum Code."

Bears arguing over who gets to keep the fishy and break the window?
EIther that or a neighbor who didn't like the cold outdoors in alaska was trying to invent a grill that would toss a cooked fish through his kitchen window automatically.... and got his hydraulics a little over powered.

I already read about this on Fark.com, or maybe obscurestore.com a couple of days ago. Great story. Quite the "I simply didn't think of that" natural explanation.

- Fish bones.
- Its a big fish - 2ft without the head.
- Glass all over the room
- Bear is in the ballpark so ... someone/thing ate the fish?
The fish was a salmon. The woman's home is a cabin built over a river with windows facing the length of the river. The cabin was accidentally built out of salmon mating season. Now that the salmon are mating they are jumping and some jumped at her windows breaking them. Her dog ate the fish?

What predatory animals live in Alaska and eat salmon?
Bears were the first thing I thought of... salmon is a pretty big fish, so it would have to be a fairly powerfull predator.

Damn I liked my answer :)
Large Alaskan predator ... wolves? Do they eat fish though? I thought they were more of a deer caribou eater. So wolves eating fish is not common. I don't think large carnivores breaking windows is common at all.
Moose? Or some large deer type animal? Perhaps rummaging in the trash. A salmon carcass getting caught on its antlers. Antlers crash into windows in an attempt to get it off? |
