I think the agenda is to try and scare people into being against homosexuality, and being god-fearing "good" Americans, that seems to be the raison d'etre of this whole ugly story. I also think they very much enjoy the attention, be it good or bad. This whole episode reminds me of some of the extremists who proclaim that the tsunami was god's or allah's punishment against a decadent way of life praticed by those who were killed in it.

Just like Phelps saying that the 9/11 attack and Iraqi war was god's vengeance against a decadent U.S. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Phelps got the idea for his latest tirade from some of the claims of these other nutters regarding the tsunami.

"Leadership is not magnetic personality—that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not "making friends and influencing people"—that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person's vision to higher sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations." Peter F. Drucker

Hm, if memory serves, he went into a screeching coniption about the the Swedes killed in the tsunami, saying to the effect that they were all a bunch of faggots, and "God Hates Sweden."

He's a redundent asshole, isn't he?

Phelps, et al, is a deluded man convinced that his faith and position as a faith leader makes him right. Possessing the absolute "Truth", with a direct link to his God, is justification for any action regardless of its detestable nature. Simply put "Phelps Hates Fags" and the christian God is just his tool.

Freedom of speech only goes so far... In Sweden he would have been prosecuted for verbally abusing minority/inciting against minority (I can't come up with a good translation for the Swedish judicial term).

Me thinks he protests a bit too much. I'd bet he's a closet gay that hates himself for it and is trying to convince God he's not a sinner. It really seems that a fair share of these nuts get overly involved in gay bashing for a reason.

If it were in my area, I'd get the whole town out to honor the dead soldiers at the funeral.

Like many if not all fringe cult leaders, he's a frothing sociopath. He has a long history of violence against his family as well as being unsuccessful as a lawyer (I forget why he was disbarred).

A couple of years ago, we speculated here that he might be in the closet; a somber thread concerning who's penis he yearned so tragicly for. If memory serves, the late Matthew Sheppard won due to all of the attention Phelps gave his funeral (I, having a dose at the time, was laid hors d'combat at the final judging).

It has been said that Phelps no longer has a theology, if he ever did, and is running on pure venom. I rather tend to agree. He's a little long in the tooth to get a serious Jonestown act going, but I'd not be suprised to learn that one or more of his followers did when he finally does the world a favor and croaks.

And that is the real danger of Phelps; his legacy.
