Nobody here has mentioned live8 yet. This was a *really* big thing in the UK - I'm not sure how much press it got elsewhere.
You tell me - what do you know about live8? What do you think about g8?
I personally am optimistic. I think we may be able to put enough pressure on the g8 members (individuals not countries) to achieve something cool. You never know.
Cheers

Oh, ya, I saw it on BBC's site. Don't know a lot, though. Apparently Bill Gates did a cameo, very cool. More power to him. |

It barely registered on our radar in the states, Its the big vacation weekend so no one is around and everyone has stuff to do. Not like GWB listens to us anyway.
Plus its an affront to the activist group I started PPSSADE, People for Pretending Sub-Saharan Africa Doesnt Exist. Which is a sister organization to PPSASDE, People for Pretending the San Antonio Spurs Dont Exist. |

Friends over at rec.music.gaffa/Love-Hounds newsgroup/mailinglist (a Kate Bush fanclub founded on USENET back in -86) were railing against Empty-Vee (MTV) for completely fucking up the broadcast. Illitterate/uneducated Loosers as commentators were talking way too much (and barely had any historical knowledge of old musicians/icons).
I missed it completely. |

Did I miss Kate Bush on there?
I listened to a lot of it on XM Radio, didn't catch her. |

I'm not much into music and didn't personally follow the event. However, I hear it talked about on the various news outlets, such as CNN. As has been mentioned, though, this was a big US holiday weekend (with an unusually high amount to travel expected), so attention may have been less than were it to have happened at another time.
Regarding MTV's horrible coverage-- well, though I haven't tuned into that channel for years, I did see this, which suggests that Mab and his friends weren't the only ones to hate what they did... |

No you didn't miss her, she wasn't there. Ever since she got her little boy (I think some 7 or 8 years ago), she's been a full time mom. There has been several announcements about her upcoming album. Several musicians have reported recording for her, and the latest release date that circulated was March or May. Kate Bush rarely makes any appearence, and I think Sectret Policeman's Third Ball was her last official live performance (with David Gilmore). The appeared on the "Wogan Show" in -94 playing "Moments of Pleasure", but it could have been playback. I need to check Love-Hounds-Collection (now available on DVD, PM me for info) for that. |

Live 8 and the G8 were pretty big as far as I could tell - but I live in Philadelphia, so yeah, it would be.
Anyway, NPR made fun of Live 8 by basically saying that most of the people attending are there for the music, and don't know shit about Africa. And on newsmax.com (a conservative news source) they were saying that a lot of the celebrities in Philly who supposedly volunteered their time and services actually got "paid" in the form of up to thousands of dollars in gifts and accomodations.
But you can't say Live 8 did anything harmful, really, and it probably did some, if not a lot of, good, so more power to it. |

If I'd known that Pink Floyd was to get back together for a little while, I might have tuned in at the appropriate time--Just for old time's sake. Other than that, I'm not a Pop or Hip-Hop fan. I'm not even much into Rock these days.
Anyway, I really don't recall many positive statements coming from the mainstream media before or during the event in the USA. Even afterwards, Geldorf wasn't too impressed. See link...

They played songs from two of the Live8 concerts for a whole hour of prime time TV. That's a lot more than the 1/2 to 1 million protesters for women's rights on the capitol lawn and the same number protesting the NY Republican convention got.
What gets me is the G8 trying to take credit for acting to "end African poverty" and addressing AIDS and global warming. Somehow I doubt this is more than lip service. |
