I also read (someplace else) that if you tell people to pick a number 1-10, a disproportionately large number of them will pick 7.

I've heard that most people first when asked to pick a number from 1-10, will first think either "7" or "not 7" so that there is a 50% chance that 7 will be picked.

It would be interesting to survey people with these.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Wonderful, the tricks the mind can play.

The tool is a very common one in one form or another, everywhere. I'd be willing to bet that every household has at least one, and if not, soon will. I think that I missed the "correct" answer due to having a mechanical background and a lot of tools, some of them pretty esoteric.

I think that the simple math merely gets the mind into a sort of smoothed-out, lightly concentrated state where the sudden, off-the-wall mention of a tool automatically brings up the one virtually everybody has and uses on a pretty regular basis.

As to the color, I dunno how that's arrived at but it's probably along those same lines. Fun stuff.
