This gem is from Harun Yahya:
quote: This book reveals that Muslims, Christians, and Jews have common principles of faith, worship, and moral values; face common dangers; and calls on the People of the Book (Christians and Jews) to unite with Muslims as fellow believers opposed to atheism, anti religiosity, and social as well as moral degeneration.
Gee, how nice, a muslim preaching "tolerance". Too bad it's only to try to get all those idiots to gang up on US!!

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

This doesn't scare me. What scares me more is that Christians in America are uniting against secularists. My mother is Catholic, and she and her church-going buddies are deeply dismayed and confused by how friendly the Catholic Church has become toward the religious right, and how much the Church has in common, politically, with evangelical fundamentalists. It's like they've forgotten that Catholics have been hated and sometimes percecuted in this nation by Protestants.
Funny thing, if any religious groups with fundamental theological differences band together to gang up on a minority like atheists, the minorities among them are true fools. If they succeed, who do they think the majority group will turn on next?

I'd have added a few more bits of colorfull invective... but I agree with the sentiment.

Historically (or hysterically, depending upon how you look at it) all of the different religions and sects despise the others -- witness the Sunni/Shia situation in Iraq. In the days of Luther and the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church hated the Protestants and harassed them whenever possible. And sent numerous, mostly unsuccessful crusades against the Muslims under the guise of freeing the Holy Lands, but really in search of loot and killing Muslims, pretty much in that order.
In 1090, Pope Urban II called for crusade and sent 20, 000 devout idiots off on what became the First Crusade. Then, after a few more bloody debacles including the asinine Children's Crusade, in 1213 Pope Innocent III (who gave permission for the Children's Crusade), declared the Prophet Mohammed as the Anti-Christ, and then all sorts of interesting stuff happened.
Well, you can't do that sort of thing anymore, at least not so blatantly, so, because everybody hates the unbeliever, they/we are easy targets. But unless they can get some heresy trials going, they'll get bored and go back to hating each other soon enough.

In the words of Dan Barker (FFRF) "I am willing to change my mind. I have done it before."
However, I doubt that religious understand what it will take in order for me to change my mind. Since evidence and faith are no longer distinct in their minds. |

This sounds like a proposition from another former erstwile leader:
"I couldn't but -- one point in our discussions privately with General Secretary Gorbachev -- when you stop to think that we're all God's children, wherever we may live in the world, I couldn't help but say to him, just think how easy his task and mine might be in these meetings that we held if suddenly there was a threat to this from some other species from another planet outside in the universe. We'd forget all the little local differences that we have between our countries and we would find out once and for all that we really are all human beings here on this earth together. "
Ronald Reagan.
Now if only them pesky aliens would co-operate and invade. already. |

Reagan managed to croak forth a profound truth, there. We would indeed unite to vigorusly face the alien threat. What he failed to do was finish the scenero: as soon as the threat was gone, or at least diminished, we would instantly remember old slights and fights, and go back to killing each other with gusto.

Gee, how nice, a muslim preaching "tolerance". Too bad it's only to try to get all those idiots to gang up on US!!
I once purchased one of his books. It went by the fancy title "The Evolution Deceit". It has some great quotes like about how "Darwinism" is the cause of terrorism.
The reason i bought it was because i was curious to the muslim-perspective on creationism. I was never so dissappointed. The whole book is just a condensation of other, better known, christian authors like Behe, Denton, Wells and Meyer.
Nevertheless, purchasing it was an experience in itself. This book caught my eye in the window of a small store in the north part of Utrecht. I walked in on the assumption that i would just pick up the book, take it to the counter, pay it and be off. Silly me. Upon me entering the store i found it empty. Presumbably they don't get a lot of customers, what with the location being a bit outof the way and all. All kinds of merchandise decorated the shop, but there was only one bookstand. The rest of the materials on display seemed to be all kinds of tapestry and silverware. I walked over to the bookstand and picked up the book from Yahya. It was the only one not in arabic anyway, so i didn't need a lot of time to make my choice. Having picked up the book i walked over to the counter. Still noone there, but i did hear some noise coming from a backroom behind a curtain hanging from the ceiling. I briefly considered just putting some money on the counter and taking the book with me, but i didn't have exact change and i certainly wasn't going to pay more for this book then what it was worth. I deceided to cough loudly. This caused an abrubt silence in the backroom. Footsteps approached the curtain and a head peeked out. This specific head belonged to a young arabic women, probably in her early twenties. Upon seeing me her eyes narrowed. Evidently, i wasn't supposed to be there. "Excuse me", i said while holding up up the book "I noticed this book on display and i'd like to buy it." Upon seeing the book her eyes lit up in religious fervour. I'll save you the 15-minute monologue that followed, primarily because i don't remember it by heart. The gist of it was however how great it was that i showed such an interest in Islam. One little gem i haven't been able get outof my mind. At some point she actually said that people being prepared to blow themselves up for the purpose of spreading the word of Allah was proof of the justness of their cause. Yikes. I still can't believe this woman lives in the same city as i do. At the earliest possible occasion i excused myself and scurried out the door, making a dash for the comfort of my home. Religious fundamentalists scare the crap outof me. |

It would probably start with an argument over who actually defeated the aliens.
