Folks-
I am polling the people here. I have been asked to give a talk to a local Rotary club, and I know nothing about them, their ideals or politics. I checked the main website (http://www.rotary.org/) but this does not give me unbiased information, of course.
I have turned down invitations to other groups in the past when I have disagreed with their politics, so I am asking you all here if there is more to this group than is on their webpage. Anyone have any interesting info?

Hi, BA,
AFAIK, Rotary is a non-religious social organization. It has no particular political axe to grind that I've ever heard of. I would expect that local Rotary chapters would tend to reflect the political norms of that community's business and professional types -- basically middle-of-the-road Republicans, in most parts of the US.
Of course, I can't imagine what the chapter would be like up the road from me in Cambridge, MA, or out there on the Left Coast...

My experience (limited) mirrors Donnie B.'s position. They have supported academic achievement without regard for the scholar's non-academic interests or leanings.
My kids still love me. |

What will be the subject of your speech? Rotary clubs love to give out scholarships. A little hint that the hard sciences are in need might be nice. Lisa

Generally they grab on tight with their tail spines, and they can generate quite a current with their thrashing cilia. Oh wait, BA, that's rotifers. Rotary clubs seem generally public-spirited sorts of organizations. Have fun!

That is scary Dog_Ed. I thought I was the only one twisted enough to associated Rotarians with rotifers. Thanks ... I think.

OK folks, thanks for the input. The talk is only supposed to be 20-25 minutes, so I'm scratching my head over the topic. Probably the Moon Hoax; I have to give a talk on that next week also for less than a half hour. I like to stress critical thinking and basic science in my talks, so hopefully they'll catch the hint. ;-) [/quote]
