Titanic was possibly the shittiest movie I've ever seen. And Kil: agreed about Blue Velvet. |

I forgot to mention Animal House

The Bank Dick W.C. Fields is hired as a security officer after (accentually) foiling a bank robbery. Hilarious insanity ensues. If you never plan to see another Fields film, see this one. It is Fields at his best.
The African Queen Humphry Bogart and Katherine Hepburn are wonderful in this John Huston film about a grungy boat operator of questionable morals and a missionary thrown into the unlikely circumstance of having to navigate a jungle river together.
Raging Bull Martin Scorsese's film about Jake LaMotta, the fighter. Robert De Niro is amazing in this physiological profile of a self-destructive man. Some consider this the best film Scorsese has ever made.
Fargo The Coen Brothers film about a kidnapping and a few murders in Minnesota. The attention to detail, the story and the wonderfully realized characters make this as close to a perfect film as any I can think of. It's also funny…
Alien HR Giger sets and monster, a female protagonist and a really great take on the “slasher” genre make this film special. None of the sequels touch the original for sheer suspense and horror.
After the Goldrush Charley Chaplin at his best. And that is saying something…
And there are still more where those came from…

PotC was actually pretty cool, pure entertainment value. |

Maybe, but my money is not going to support Gibson or the groups who clutch this movie to their breasts as if it were the absolute truth (which obviously it is not). I may watch it if I can get it for free.
I will never, ever watch Titantic.
On that note, I enjoyed The Last Tempation of Christ. |

I've seen quite a few of the movies recommended so far, and for the most part I thought they were really good (with the notable exceptions of Citizen Kane and Blade runner - couldn't stand them). I've also managed to add quite a few others to my "must see list". Marvellous.
Here are some other must-sees I just remembered: Blues Brothers: Classic. Great music. Great sense of humour. Great car crashes. First blood: One man to kill them all. The jungle book: Disneys original animated movie. Charming. Great music.

If we say movies pre 1990, then Lord of the Rings is disqualified, as well as The Matrix.
Pre-1990, I was still wetting my diapers I thought this was an all-time favorites thread. But pre-1990... mm... I'll have to think this.
Well... The name of the thread was "Movies that have stood the test of time", and not much time have passed since -90...
Alien is great, and though I like Aliens (2) just as much (it's a great action movie, especially the extended version), I don't feel it's really that appropriate to this thread.
Dr. Strangelove was cool, and the maker of "Armageddon" (Bruce Willis) paid some homage to Dr. Strangelove. Once you've seen both (preferably Dr. Strangelove first), you'll know what I mean .
Kil: I can't really decide if I like Blue Velvet or Wild at Heart more. Twin Peaks is one of my most favourite non-sci-fi TV series. |

Wow. I totally misunderstood the title. I swear I read "movies that will stand the test of time"... talk about sleepy.
But those will stand the test of time. |

The King of Hearts, "Ah, but they are all over acting." I originally saw this movie as a double feature. The other one was, Bambi Meets Godzilla. Laughed so hard I nearly pissed my pants
Silent Movie by Mel Brooks. I saw this on back to back night when it first came out.
The Unforgiven by Clint Eastwood. "He shouldn't have decorated his bar with my friend."
And as mentioned before, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. |

Huge Kubrick fan here:
2001 Dr. Strangelove.
Also Unforgiven.
And...Groundhog Day. This movie works on so many levels from out an out comedy to deep metaphysical to understanding the nature of time itself.

Hmm, so many classics...That Ive never seen...
I propose a new forum rule, anyone who mentions Armageddon in the same line as Dr. Strangelove should be banned. The Doc can get a pass this time I guess. Once again.. Dr. Strangelove, Is probably the finest film I have ever seen
Network, Cant say enough about Network
Anything with Sidney Poitier in it, this guy can act his ass off. A Patch of Blue being my favorite.
The Godfather of course
Annie Hall
Bonnie and Clide
The Blues Brothers
Its a Wonderful Life
The Wild Bunch
Manchurian Candidate
The Deer Hunter
Shawshank Redemption
And So on
