I suggest we all dig holes in the ground and hide ion them forever, coming out only for food or People magazines.

Yes its silly, but no, it doesn't surprise me. There's been groups trying to get Halloween banned since I was a tyke, probably longer. As far as hiding in a hole...:sigh: there's too many out there who will happily hide in their basements til they die of old age. I'm not one of them. Well, with half the country in hiding, the queues at Disney World will be shorter. Lisa

The key to that article is in the last line where the Gov. tells you to spend Halloween with "church groups." Another Gawd damned Kristian politician trying to impose his religious beliefs on everyone else. They have been trying to ban Samhain (pronounced Sah•wain) since St Patty got rid of the snakes (that story is ACTUALLY about him trying to get rid of Halloween). It is the Celtic New Year and has remained relativly unchanged-including the Trick or Treats- for the past 3500 years. Much more well established than Johnny-come-lately holidays, like Christmas.

If that "church group" is the local wiccan community then maybe, they might have a pretty good party set up. Maybe go as a zombie
Anyway I'm going to a party this weekend, and I"m making sure there will be candy for visitors on Halloween. Or maybe some nice powdered donuts?

Okay, that was sort of sick. Thank you.
BTW, (and I already hate myself for even asking this), is this a costume party? If yes, you will go dressed as.....? Lisa

Oh I can be very good at sick.
Yes, it is a costume party. Had a lot of trouble comming up with an idea for it. For a while I was going to fall back on cutting out a volleyball, putting it on my head and calling myself Willson. But I found a nice toga so I'll be going out as a decadent roman. Got the wine covered, or whatever it is we will drink, just looking for the orgy.

Good. I had a mental picture of a fake beard and a tablecloth tied around your head. The law enforcement authorities are just the tiniest bit nervous right now. We wouldn't want to hear about you getting arrested...or worse. Lisa

God help anyone dressing up as Jesus this year. He was conspicuously middle eastern looking and bound to cause trouble....

No need to worry about that. I may be a little weird or even sick at times, but I'm not suicidal. Anyway one of the people that will most likely be at the party is a cop. He's got a great sence of humor (and about 80lbs on me). I'm sure if I did something out of line he'd carefuly explain the problem and set me strait.

From the article:
quote: He says if you add some scared parents to the mix it will only get worse. "We're not encouraging the change in the Halloween plans because there is an increased risk, we're encouraging it because we can't handle the panic of a parent that looks into the sack and sees a broken pixie stick and thinks it's anthrax."
Ya know, here's a crazy idea: Why not have a COMMUNITY Halloween party?!?!?! The park near my house has them practically every year for the kids in the neighborhood. Also, they can keep an eye on all the adults before the go loco.

That kind of statement should be kept to yourself. You could get taken to the pokey these days for distributing powdery substances. I understand that big time can be dished out for people playing with jokes concerning white powder.
Perhaps we could all write to you in prison...

LOL, I thought that white powder line was very funny. Hey! I work with clay, much of it is a white or gray color which cakes up and gets powdery. Not to mention the glazes that do also and are all sorts of chemicals mixed together. I often wear the clothes I work in, out in public. I'll be damned if anyone tells me what to do just because they are hysterical loonies. AND, hey, all you guys.....stop being sacrilegious to my most favorite holiday. I have a collection of Halloween stuff and costumes going back over many years. I will never stop loving it or dressing up for it. Speaking of dressing up, does anyone know where to get one of those 'robes' that they wear over there in Afganistan? The ones that cover you from head to toe. I think they are pretty and would like to have one, to wear on any occasion, as I do with my other costumes as well. Thank you. nlm

You won't have too much luck there. I don't think there's any Islamic communities in this country that are quite as oppressive as the Taliban. Do you sew? I have some nice silk headwear from Turkey. All I have from Saudi Arabia is a bunch of gold and a nice knife collection. The community hall bit for the kids is a good idea. With the world becoming a more dangerous place, the days of door-to-door trick or treating are probably on the wane. Too sad. Halloween was always my favourite, beating out Santa and that stupid rabbit any day. The way people drive around here, if I had a kid, I'd probably dress her as "reflective tape girl". Lisa

Here's the really scary thing Slater - some of the websites for government officials (you know the *.gov ones) had "Gawd Bless American" across their websites.
I am leary about my kid going out but I think she needs the mad dash around the neighborhood collecting junk food.

Church signs are popping up all over the place (as usual this time of year).
"Fall Carnival, Oct. 31st (no costumes, please)"
It's quite pathetic, actually...
By the way, when I say "all over the place" I literally mean all over the freakin' town. The number of churches here is obscene, and they are becoming bigger and more extravegant every year. There's a 5 mile stretch of road leading to our house, and my wife and I have a minor daydream about opening some sort of bar or pub. But there are laws saying you can't sell liquor within 1000 feet of a church.
On this 5 mile stretch, I don't believe there's a single spot that qualifies.
