New twist on Iraq aid: U.S. seeks donations

BY CAM SIMPSON

Chicago Tribune

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - From the Indian Ocean tsunami to the church around the corner, Americans have shown time and again they are willing to open their pocketbooks for charity, for a total of about $250 billion last year alone.

But now, amid pleas for aid after Hurricane Katrina, the Bush administration has launched an unusual effort to raise charitable contributions for another cause: the government's attempt to rebuild Iraq.

Although more than $30 billion in taxpayer funds have been appropriated for Iraqi reconstruction, the administration earlier this month launched an Internet-based fundraising effort that it says is aimed at giving Americans "a further stake in building a free and prosperous Iraq."

Contributors have no way of knowing who's getting the money or precisely where it's headed, because the government says it must keep the details secret for security reasons.

But taxpayers already finance the projects the administration is seeking charitable donations for, such as providing water pumps for farmers. And officials say any contributions they receive will increase the scope of those efforts, rather than relieve existing taxpayer burdens.

Not one volentary, fucking dime from me! Let the Bush True Believers foot his credit card bill!

Consider the bolded paragraph. Who knows where the money will go? Into Iraq Security, as some earmarked for reconstruction already has? Shit, some might end up in Republican campaign coffers -- would you put it past Bush and his cronies?

I hope that lying, treasonous son-of-a-bitch falls off his fucking bicycle and onto Crotalus atrox.

That sounds so strange, it could be a joke from a Jay Leno monologue or something. I hope this isn't the case, but I don't see convincing indications the scene in Iraq is, or will get better. It looks like all of the dominant religious militants see it that way, and are gearing up for Iraq War 3 (the civil war) as soon as the US leaves. What a mess. If we're not outta' there or things haven't changed radically by the time the next election comes around, the next President will have the least desirable job in the world (he/she might anyway.) I hope I'm absolutely wrong, but idunno.

It's no joke and no secret that billions and billions of dollars are unaccounted for in Iraq. Those on Air America and Democracy Now radio, and the folks from Moveon.org have been calling for a Congressional investigation and demand an accounting of the money for some time now. The mainstream media has yet to move the story ahead of lost teenagers in Aruba.

At first I thought that it must be a joke, too. But I couldn't find the punchline. I still hope it's a joke; can Bush really be that stupid and still manage to aim at the toilet in the morning?

The incompetence of this administration is only exceeded by it's corruption. Bush should be impeached and tried in a court of law, a consitutional right that he has denied to other American citizens, for charges ranging from war crimes and treason, to loafing on the job.

But I still want to see the arrogant rat-bastard fall off his fucking bicycle and land on a nest of Solenopsis invicta......

..... inspiring a Conneticut Carpetbagger's version of the Traumatic Texas Two-Step. May he then form his close and endearing assoiation with Crotalus atrox.

The good news? In the past year we Americans have donated $250 billion to various charities. The better news? It looks like the kindness of our hearts comes to an abrupt halt when we're asked to donate to George Bush's secret fund to rebuild Iraq.
quote:
Bush Plea for Cash to Rebuild Iraq Raises $600...

An extraordinary appeal to Americans from the Bush administration for money to help pay for the reconstruction of Iraq has raised only $600 (£337), The Observer has learnt. Yet since the appeal was launched earlier this month, donations to rebuild New Orleans have attracted hundreds of millions of dollars.

[...]

USaid's Heather Layman denied it was disappointed with the meagre sum raised after a fortnight. 'Every little helps,' she said.
I'm not sure how one would go about determining the amount generated by this slimy bit of begging, but apparently the results aren't as big of a secret as the recipients and the destination of the funds. If this article proves to be true it's pretty obvious the return is pretty darn meager. Take a hint George. That's how much we care. Time to end this maniacal campaign of terror against the citizens of Iraq.
