Rob Sherman proposes a new motto for the USA: United We Stand
I plan on doing what I can to help Rob in his efforts. I hope you all will do the same.

This may sound silly, but out of curiousity I gave the guy a call. Very nice and sincere. I wanted to know what the realistic chances of this are. His was honest - in the short term, zero. Everyone is busy trying to out-bible each other to show how patriotic they are. I think United We Stand would be a much better motto. While yes, sometimes this country is like a large squabbling disfunctional family, if someone messes with us, we'll close ranks. It also shows that while the country is made up of 50 states, its still one country. Lisa

What is so unfortunate is that any attempt at doing this is seen by so many (ignorant) people as being malicious. Until we can (if we can) convince the average person that it is wrong on simple principle for us to have "In God We Trust" and "Under God" on money and in our Pledge, anyone advocating this is portrayed as "eeeviiiiiil".
But I will certainly do anything I can to help us do that.

I think that "E Pluribus Unum" is more a more appropriate National Motto because of its deeper meaning and historical significance.

I would ordinarily agree, Terg, but the obstacle these days seems to be finding something that gives individual and collective emotional solidarity. EPU is full of historical significance, as you said, but it doesn't have the emotional punch that people seem to need now.
