The Times October 05, 2005

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.

The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.

bible is fantasy, -then- I'll say, "Great Googly-Moogly!"

No doubt they left the incorrect parts open to interpretation....

Wait I found the true part! Published by...

This could be the giant leap for mankind that we have been wishing for.

It's nice to see that Catholics are distancing themselves from the radicals, and moving toward a more firgurative interpretation. Considering the number of Catholics in the States, this will be a good thing.

1 denomination down, 14,954,825 to go.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Yes, but it's the largest one, isn't it?

Not according to this site:

52% of Americans identified themselves as Protestant.
bullet 24.5% are Roman Catholic.

Although those are the two largest groups.

Adherents.org is the place to go for all your religious-statistics needs. Catholicism is the largest single sect, but all the Protestant sects added together leave Catholics in the dust.

That's in the U.S. I'm pretty sure Catholics are by far the larger group world-wide. But it's sort of irrelevant since this statement was only issued by bishops of England, Wales and Scotland. It's isn't a papal decree.

Still, for Catholics a statement like this one isn't actually news. The Catholic Church has never maintained a position of a literal bible. That's all they mean when they state: "We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision." Rabbits chew their cud? Catholics have no problems admitting the bible got that wrong. The Church maintains that the bible is spiritually true and inerrant.

Blame the headline "Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible" on a few overzealous editors looking to spice up an otherwise unremarkable story.
