Wow! The Democrats in the Senate finally show they have some balls. Of course it begs the question, what on Earth took them so long?
quote:
Democrats Close Senate Doors in Iraq Protest...

Invoking a little used rule, Democrats temporarily shut down television cameras in the chamber, cleared galleries of reporters, tourists and other onlookers, forced removal of staff members and recording devices and stopped work on legislation.

"At its core, this is about accountability -- congressional accountability and White House accountability," said Sen. John Rockefeller of West Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Democrats were pressing that committee to produce a report on whether the Bush administration misused intelligence on Iraq's weapons to justify the March 2003 invasion. No weapons of mass destruction were found.

Democrats said that report was a year overdue and vowed to close more sessions to pressure Republicans to produce it. "We're serving notice on them at this moment. Be prepared for this motion every day until you face the reality," said Senate Democratic Whip Richard Durbin of Illinois.

Republicans were outraged.

This is a very good sign! Which republican wants to step up and spend their "political capital" now, bitches?

Outraged is just the way I like Republicans to be. Apoplectic is even better. If they are in high dudgeon, then the country is on it's way to recovery.

But if the track record of the Democrats is any indication, this might be just a flash in the pan.

I think the democrats smell blood. The media is turning on Bush. Bush numbers are terrible. A lot of the public perception of the Bush administration has changed in the last few months. And it isn't as though the Democrats are not aware of their own image expressed here but widely held, and I am sure they would like to change that. It's my opinion that they see their opening and can now act upon it with genuine public and media support. My gut is that this is no flash in the pan.

Perhaps I've seen them roll tits-to-the-sky too many times and it's turned me cynical.

I certainly hope you're right.

Chorus.-Awa' Whigs, awa'!
Awa' Whigs, awa'!
Ye're but a pack o' traitor louns,
Ye'll do nae gude at a'.

Our thrissles flourish'd fresh and fair,
And bonie bloom'd our roses;
But Whigs cam' like a frost in June,
An' wither'd a' our posies.
Awa' Whigs, &c.

Our ancient crown's fa'en in the dust-
Deil blin' them wi' the stoure o't!
An' write their names in his black beuk,
Wha gae the Whigs the power o't.
Awa' Whigs, &c.

Our sad decay in church and state
Surpasses my descriving:
The Whigs cam' o'er us for a curse,
An' we hae done wi' thriving.
Awa' Whigs, &c.

Grim vengeance lang has taen a nap,
But we may see him wauken:
Gude help the day when royal heads
Are hunted like a maukin!
Awa' Whigs, &c.

That stupid carrying on by Frist about the outrage was comical. I doubt the American public can even figure out what he was on about given it was just a closed door session from their viewpoint. The Republicans are making themselves look really bad by letting on the session was an attack on the credibility of the administration. If they had just kept their mouths shut the public would have paid very little attention.

Senate shutdown by the Dems is "killing an gnat with a shotgun" approach and they will loose credibility every time they use it. They want to reinvestigate a topic that has been investigated by congress before. Dems just didn't like the outcome. They have a forlorn hope that repetition can alter reality. vrwc

A couple of questions come to mind at this point. Kennedy was interviewed on a news program today, and confronted with video tapes of himself, Kerry, and other Democrats making statements to the effect that Sadaam Hussein had to be removed, and their support of the war was thereafter noted. I have to admit that his response as to "why" was unsatisfactory. Are they scapegoating a Republican administration, and their party, for any blame that might realistically be equally shared, if blame is to apply?

The Bush administration admits that the post-war planning was inadequate, but insists that progress has been made towards the stabilization of Iraq, and that a liberally-biased media has distorted a picture of progress by emphasizing bloodshed, various blunders which are bound to occur in any major effort (perfection never exists in war) including accounting questions, and logistical obstacles. Is there evidence that this could be the case?

Even Bill Clinton stated that he felt President Bush was sincere in believing his actions to be in the best interest of the United States, although they disagreed on issues. If President Bush isn't acting in what he considers the best interests of this country, what ARE his interests? What could his motives possibly be?
