Talk about deception. I hated tomatos all my life, then I found out they were actually fruit. Like finding out Rush is a closet Democrat.

I'm one of those people ("those people") who jump at the chance to point out what is really a fruit (you'd probably be surprised), among other inanities (it's "viruses", not "virii"!!!). Sure, it's annoying, but I find it highly entertaining!
Anyway, my wife sent me a link once (or showed me an article) where apparently in the early part of last century, the Supreme Court actually ruled that the tomato was a vegetable, or economic reasons, despite the fact that technically it is a fruit. I'll try to dig it up.

The Reagan administration tried to make ketchup (catsup?) a vegetable, for nutrition purposes. Maybe they should have declared it "fruit juice" instead...

LOL! I remember that. As I recall, there had been a push to increase funding for school meal programs. Someone had decided that lower income students probably weren't getting proper nutrition at home, so they wanted the school meals to provide more nutrition. IMO, the problem Reagan and his crowd had with the plan was that it would funnel money to the wrong end of the political and economic spectrum. Lisa

"4 tablespoons of ketchup, about the amount you would eat with a order of frys, are the nutritional equivalent of an entire ripe medium tomato."
And it tastes better, too!

Not quite so. Tomatos don't have added sugar and who knows what else that's in ketchup. As far as taste, well, if you like overly sweet and tart tomatos. No thank you, for me.

I just don't understand why they think that it's a good idea to make ketchup so thick you can't get it out of the bottle without surgical tools.

This is why plastic squeeze bottles are the bomb.
Also, apparently the new multi-colored ketchups (green, purple, blue, and of course red) have a new kind of top that catches the watery yuckiness that accumulates at the top of the sauce.

Why is it the 'watery yuckiness' is so repulsive by itself but hardly warrants a second thought when mixed with the paste? I can't believe this stuff is so gross that we have to design special caps to keep it off our burgers.

I just can't tell you how pleased I am to see that a poll on Skeptic Political Orientation has lead to a discussion of the viscosity of ketchup. I didn't vote when I saw the poll. I still haven't and I never will. You are making me very happy. Thanks!

I was about to post and ask why anarchist isn't on there. I almost chose libertarians just for the hell of it.

I went with liberalism.
Myself? I'm what Monty Python once described as a 'Neo-fascist, post-existential communist', but when pressed I will admit to being a militant centrist. Depends on whatever issue I'm approaching I guess.

I voted *no bias* because a true skeptic would not pre-judge anything, but would question and evaluate everything before making up his/her mind. Otherwise, just what would the word *skeptic* mean?
