WTF?

I do believe if we get some hardcore Republicans back who claim the dumbing down of America, I'll have to agree with them.

This is just......... wrong.

I do't know Siberia, don't be surprised.

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

I fail to see the problem. Hardly anyone reads the classics anyway.

Of course, this reduces them to gibberish, but whaddahell; anyone who wants to actually read the classice can hie his intellectual ass off to the library and snuggle up with the rest of the nerds and geeks, and no-life losers. All that is important is passing the test.

Well, I don't read the classics because more often than not they're dead boring.

I'll bet a lot of people said that about Cliff's Notes, which is exactly what the marketeers of this texting thing want people comparing it to.

This isn't 1337. It's SMS "slang". With 1337, characters are replaced with other similar looking characters T:7, E:3 etc. This SMS thing was the result of trying to save space due to the 72 character limit for a single SMS. I used to use it, but it's become so wide spread even in mediums where space is not a premium (like emails) that it really annoys me now.

Gotcha. It's because they do look alike. I've never been a SMS fan, anyway and, like I said, doesn't translate well to portuguese anyway.

Except that when typing letters, it doesn't take up 3 (or 4) bytes in the SMS. So exchanging 'T' with '7' nothing is saved. Specially when many phones have adapted the T9 software.

This SMS thing is interesting... I'd never heard of it. Oh well.

RE classics, I'm a slow reader (even was as a youth) so as one might imagine, reading those ever-so-long fiction books was doubly torturous drudgery for a normal kid who was bouncing-off-walls to begin with. High school literature class teacher ordered we read and report on one from her list (blah!) else have her approve our choice... I ran a Hunter S. Thompson classic (I think it was "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas") by her, and she said "No"... that it had to be a classic (well, that's a classic... kind of... it just wasn't her kind of classic, that's all.) In my frustration, I finally ran Hemmingway (The Old Man and the Sea) by her (mainly because it was short, and she probably knew that) but she grudgingly approved. It turned out to be a decent book.
