From factcheck.org:

The Republican National Committee is running an internet-based ad featuring the white flag of surrender, accusing Democrats of making defeatist statements. It shows brief snippets of recent statements by Howard Dean, Barbara Boxer and John Kerry.

The ad has become quite controversial. Democratic Sen. Daniel Inouye, a Medal of Honor winner from World War II, calls it "shameful and disgusting." And at least one Republican Senator, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, called on the RNC to take the ad down, saying "I don't want to have a campaign about who's a patriot."

The quotes used in the ad are accurate as far as they go, but whether they amount to advocating "retreat and defeat" is a matter of interpretation. We supply the context of each statement and additional background so that our readers may better judge the ad's fairness for themselves.

Full analysis here: http://www.factcheck.org/article364.html

You know, the sad thing to me is that this sort of ad probably works on a lot of people. If it didn't, nobody would pay to have it made and aired. Who are these morons that buy this garbage? I really wouldn't have a problem if television political ads were just banned in this country.

Marf, I'm not so sure those attack ads are working all that well any more. They've gone to that well too many times and it's beginning to dry up. I've read Dean's statement and the ads are a prime example of quote mining.

But they'll keep doing it; it's all the Republicans have.

Sadly, I think they are indeed very effective and if we don't start countering soon, the Democrats will never get back in control. I for one, am getting very angry the Democrats can't figure out how to market a better image.

I would like to see, instead of claims that we can't win or we need to pull the troops out, a much better message:

We need to fire Haliburton and hire Iraqis. We need to find out where the missing billions have gone, get the money back and stop supporting corruption including fake news stories. We need to stop building permanent military bases. We need to find out why training Iraqi troops and police has not succeeded and fix the problem. We need to ask if we are welcome there not just assume we are. Put that question on the ballot. We need to stop any torture and stop killing civilians immediately. Etc.

That should be the message, not pull out and we can't win. The latter messages are true but since when has truth mattered in government lately?
