Hooray for the rational Christians!

quote:
The Vatican's chief astronomer said Friday that "intelligent design" isn't science and doesn't belong in science classrooms, the latest high-ranking Roman Catholic official to enter the evolution debate in the United States.

The Rev. George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said placing intelligent design theory alongside that of evolution in school programs was "wrong" and was akin to mixing apples with oranges.

"Intelligent design isn't science even though it pretends to be," the ANSA news agency quoted Coyne as saying on the sidelines of a conference in Florence. "If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science."

Hooray on Mr. Coyne!
Glad to know someone still thinks in Vatican.

Good deal. Now if they could just get over those silly ideas about miracles and gods and converting heathens and stuff. I'll have to admit my very first thought was that "rational Christians" should be found in a list of oxymorons with such phrases as "military intelligence" and "boneless ribs".

Yes, I know you have a distain for the spiritual even more than I do, but I figure they are not going to go away until the sun burns up the planet so we had better learn to live with them.

At least they're not lynching us anymore, right?

Its "Christian science" that goes on the list.

Edit: spelling

Let's not get too excited about this.

(11-11) 12:48 PST VATICAN CITY, (AP) --

Pope Benedict XVI has waded into the evolution debate in the United States, saying the universe was made by an "intelligent project" and criticizing those who in the name of science say its creation was without direction or order.

Benedict made the off-the-cuff comments during his general audience Wednesday. The Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, published the full text of his remarks in its Thursday editions.

Benedict focused his reflections for the audience on scriptural readings that said God's love was seen in the "marvels of creation."

He quoted St. Basil the Great, a fourth century saint, as saying some people, "fooled by the atheism that they carry inside of them, imagine a universe free of direction and order, as if at the mercy of chance."

And so forth. It is said that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
