According to USA Today, there's a statue of the Virgin Mary who's been crying "a substance that looks like blood."
Here's a picture:
Well, we will just have to see what happens, but I, for one, think it's going to be quite devastating when they find out next week that it's been a big hoax/prank. That or "'There's a big event in the future — earthquake, flood, a disease.'" Yee haw!

Prune juice? We get alot of that here in Texas with so many Catholics, along with all sorts of Virgin Mary pareidolia -- images in tree stumps, door veneer, rusty water tanks, even melted ice cream on the sidewalk. Thousands of the gullible line up to see/feel. Fuel for the believers.

Same ol', same ol'. I wonder if they'll ever come up with something new, like, say, a cleansed leper or perhaps talking shrubery afire.
"People seem to hunger for some tangible religious experience, and wherever there is such profound want there is the opportunity for what may be called "pious fraud." Money is rarely the primary motive, the usual impetus being to seemingly triumph over adversity, renew the faith of believers, and confound the doubters." -- Joe Nickell
I think that Joe has a pretty good take on the matter of religious delusions and frauds, and the motivation for their creation.
Here's a little more of this nonsense. I found it while looking for one that has been outed for the fraud that it is: quote: Weeping Virgin of Las Vegas: journal of a miracle by Carole Ashley
Las Vegas, Nevada, USA An hour after the midnight prayer vigil began on 12 December 1998, the miracle statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe began again to weep real tears. She cried again the following afternoon, at 2pm and 2.30pm. The tearful statue, called the "Weeping Virgin of Las Vegas" by the media, is located in the backyard of the Covarrubias family of Las Vegas, where they have built a small homemade shrine in Her honor to accommodate the many visitors since 1993, when the statue was first seen to weep.
It continues on, a serious, objective report that involved no skeptisim whatever beyond removing the statue from it's base to be sure that it's sniveling wasn't due to outside plumbing.
Edit: it looks like motor oil to me....

So when's the DNA analysis of the "blood" to find out who/what it is (or isn't)? Or will the church not let the liberal-commie-pinko-atheist-elitest scientists near their "faith renewer"? |

Isn't the crying virgin (virgin! yea, right!) thing getting kind of stale by now? First of all, why is she crying? Nobody ever explains what the signifigance of this is. She's supposed to be the mother of god, fer chrissakes, you'd think she'd be happy. I mean that job must have a kick-ass 401(k) plan. And free lodging in heaven for all eternity. Not to mention the adoration of a good portion of the world's most gullible. What the hell is there to cry about?
And it's time for her to come up with a new shtick. Branch out into some other bodily fluids. How about lactating (for the baby-J, you know)? Or sweating? Or breaking out in festering boils? Come on, you've got eternity to work on this, show a little creativity already. |

I'm really starting to lose faith in the imagination of the US populace... why can't some of these guys come up with a really cool hoax for a change, like those Brits with their crop circle dealies? I mean, ya really gotta appreciate that kind of innovative hucksterism, and here we are stuck with the same ole, same ole... e.g. guy gets flattened by steam roller, they scrape up his remains, someone points out religious figure in stains on cement, turns out the guy was atheist, "Vengeful God" story hits the tabloids and evangillogical talk show circuit. Would somebody please build a remote-controlled talking serpent or something? |

Umm... difficult....
As talking requires a fair amount of breathing beyond getting enough oxygen for survival, and as snakes only have one functional lung; and as their tongues and esophogus' are only designed for, in the first instance: scenting prey, and in the second: swallowing that prey in one, big, glorious chunk. Not to mention the fact that snakes have no ears to hear their voices and wouldn't know whether they're talking or not, there might be those of small imagination who would state that a talking snake is impossible. And they would be right, but only up to a point.
Because, you see, when you factor in the blind adherence to myth shown by vastly the largest percentage of the worlds population, then anything can be made to talk. And plaster casts that look nothing like a young, Middle Eastern woman can be made to weep who knows what sorts of stuff.
With that in mind, here is a talking Snake, the only real one the world will ever see:

Coincedently, I've just stumbled across this. quote: "There is a tremendous appeal to Mary, and it is growing," said the Rev. James Murphy, rector of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in downtown Sacramento, who noted that for centuries, great painters have made her a prominent subject. In southeast Sacramento County, an outdoor statue of Mary has become the center of attention at the humble Vietnamese Catholic Martyrs Church on Jackson Road. Since late November, believers have come to view the statue, which has a red streak running from the corner of her left eye. A priest wiped the streak away Nov. 9, but when it reappeared Nov. 20, many viewed it as tears of blood being shed.
The "weeping Mary" has drawn crowds and national media attention.
No one has actually seen tears flowing. The Diocese of Sacramento has no current plans to investigate. Others consider it a common stain or possible hoax.
And still the people come.
They bring candles and flowers, bundled-up babies, and hearts filled with prayers and petitions.
"I believe it is a miracle," said Florence Champaco, a 56-year-old woman who lives in Elk Grove and is attending school to learn medical billing. She has visited nearly every day since she first heard about the statue on television, including last Thursday in the pouring rain.
"I just come to pray," Champaco said Monday, as she stood as close as she could to the fence line, about 10 feet from the statue.
According to author Joe Nickell, who wrote "Looking for a Miracle," the red streak is a hoax, but not without possible value. Such events often can draw believers and nonbelievers to the church.
"People are anxious to see something tangible," he said. "Rather than go to church and maybe hear a sermon, you could just go be near a miracle."
For Champaco, this was not the first time she'd sought a miracle. Fifteen years ago, she traveled to St. Dominic's Church in Colfax, about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento, to view what she and many others believed was an image of Mary. The phenomenon later was determined by a physics professor to be a reflection of sunlight.
Over the years, such sightings have been reported hundreds of times throughout the world. Sometimes the locations have been predictable, such as in stained glass windows. Others have been bizarre, such as a Virgin Mary grilled cheese sandwich that sold for $28,000 a year ago on eBay.
