You see Chomsky wanting an end to brutality and torture, and an increase in democracy and freedom as negative? What to you is positive?

IMHO, Chomsky uses destructive criticism to drive home his point without any constructive criticisms of his own to act as a balance.

Gorgo, you're misreading what I wrote - and quite possibly deliberately. I was not reiterating Chomsky's message - I was commenting on the manner in which it is presented.

Destructive criticism: You're smart, so why are you being so stupid? (One I grew up hearing regarding poor grades - I heard: You're stupid. Wonder why my grades were poor?)

Constructive criticism: What do you think happened with your grades and what can we do to bring them up?

One tears down, one works toward a solution. I'd rather work toward a solution any day.

It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them. -Mark Twain

I hope this doesn't mean this thread is going to become another forum for pro- and anti-Chomsky diatribes. Aren't there three or four others of those going on right now?

Hi Donnie,

Since I started the thread, I should respond. I was just making smug observations and really didn't have a point until now. But, it seems the Pentagon has a message for Al Jazeera.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/south_asia/newsid_1653000/1653887.stm

It would appear on the surface that the Pentagon opted for a little press censorship using the sledge hammer technique. I also find it interesting that U.S. press releases (at least none that I have read) make no mention of the missle strike on the Al Jazeera facilities. The acid test will be whether anyone in the U.S. press corps has the balls to ask the Pentagon in their next news briefing why they targeted Al Jazeera.

One missle. One building destroyed after the news staff had left for the night. That was no accident by any stretch of the imagination. It was the Pentagon's way of saying to Al Jazeera... "F*CK YOU".

Remarkable.

My guess would be that the military will claim this was an accident, an example of collateral damage. I share your skepticism of that claim. And I find it very troubling that the brass would deliberately target a news organization. I hope we're wrong about this one.

Me too! Hopefully, we won't usurp the thread.

Well, to be brief, I defy anyone to find an instance of Chomsky calling someone stupid. Bad analogy, Trish.

Wasn't saying that and you know it. Was using as an example of Destructive Criticism.

And it was a bad analogy. It is wrong. Does not happen.

Are you in love, or are you asking me to elaborate on why I think specifically that Trish is wrong, and why her analogy is a bad one?

I'm asking both of you not to hijack this thread... but I fear it's too late.

Don't worry Donnie...

I refuse to answer his deliberate obtuseness.

If you don't stop that deliberate crap, I'm going to sigh. I was trying to be brief and just show that I disagree, without getting into a whole thing again. Lighten up.
