Mapes has a book, and she was on Democracy Now for an interview this week. (Dem. Now link is to part two, part one is the day before.)

Here are the documents. What she says is they went back and found other unrelated memos from the National Guard at the time of the memo in question and the type face and spacing and all that which that one bloggers claimed wouldn't have been the same and the other older memos were indeed the same as the supposedly bogus one.

This really should be easy to check. And it's too bad no one thought of it at the time. I read the guy's web site who discredited the memo. He said he was this typewriter buff and had this museum or something. He said he knew the font was wrong. Then everyone started claiming it was windows font.

Now I really wonder. I'm not one for big conspiracies but I am one for this admin coming up with some incredibly devious ways to discredit people. Just who was that masked man with the IBM selectric anyway?

I can't remember what the Colonel Killian(source of the memo) said about it after the revelation the memos were fakes. I can't remember where they got the memos, was Killian dead and they were from someone else?

Does anyone else remember any of those details?

Mapes will likely make the talk show circuit with her book promotion so it should be interesting to see what unfolds.

I studied the documents aired and thought they were believable. I you kill the messenger and discredit him, the problem goes away.

Thanks for posting this.

You're welcome. I was still hoping someone would remember the details of the memo's source. Guess I'll have to find some review material since I don't have the book.

Thanks for bringing attention to this, B!

I do recall that the colonel himself was dead by the time the questioned memos came out. I had myself assumed those memos were faked by a personal enemy of Bush's, but I'm open minded now to further evidence.

The Bush gang do large and small conspiracies all the time: The Swiftboat Vets lies, the Florida election coup (when a gang brought in mainly from Texas scared election officials so much that they stopped counting), the Iraq War's faked justifications, perhaps a conspiracy of "benign neglect" to let New Orleans and its people die, and now some kind of mysterious coverup concerning the Cheney shooting. A secret conspiracy to violate the privacy of Americans though unwarranted spying, a conspiracy to facilitate the torture of suspected terrorists.

They could rename the Administration, "Conspiracies 'R' Us."
