Looks to be alphabetized by first name...Ann Colter is on top of the pile-'o-shit quotes.

You might want to review that alphabet, Randy.
"All terrorists are Muslims", Ann C....Guess she doesn't have the brain capacity to remember McVey
Being nice to people is an incidental tenet of Christianity? also Ann C. What does she mean by incidental? That must mean when you feel like it.
"With all due respect to those dear people, my friend, God Almighty does not hear the prayer of a Jew." Bailey Smith. Well he's right you know, "God" doesn't really hear anyone's prayers.
"Sodomy is a graver sin than murder. – Unless there is life there can be no murder." Trosch... I guess it can be considered pre-premeditated. These guys sure are hung up on where their sperm ends up. If it isn't out looking for eggs it's a crime against humanity. Like their God needs help making more people for the planet. Six going on seven billion isn't enough.
Phelps is now protesting at the funerals of fallen servicemen who died in Iraq. Unbelievable he hasn't been declared a danger to himself and others. He's certainly mentally ill by most standards.
I wonder what Morris does when the Bible and the Bible differ?
I can't take the whole thing at once. And so many people have no clue how dangerous these people are. |

What I don't like about that page is the lack of reference to the source of every quote (where and when it happened). Unless I can go back and double-check, how can I be sure the quote is genuine? |

Mab blabbed: quote: What I don't like about that page is the lack of reference to the source of every quote (where and when it happened). Unless I can go back and double-check, how can I be sure the quote is genuine?
Right, Mab. Also, several separate quotes are sometimes placed together so that they seem to be part of one diatribe, when they are not. I recognized a couple of those.
The quote from Bush Sr. is suspect, to my mind, as I think he is a more moderate person than that. Though most of the quotes are probably authentic, I would not be surprised if several of them were fake attributions that have been re-quoted without research around the Web.
One quote not on that page that I ran to ground is widely attributed to Bush II: "The Constitution is only a piece of paper." The sole source of that, I found, was one liberal blogger, who wrote that two Senators gave him the quote, but didn't name the Senators. I'm sure in this case, Bush actually would agree with that "quote," but I doubt he said it. (If he had tried to say it, it would have come out more garbled.) I'm a liberal, myself, but I recognize that there are plenty of liberal bloggers who are sloppy or dishonest.
Attribution is vital!

The positiveatheism.org list of scary quotes provides a little more.

The Bush quote can be found about 3/4s down the page. http://www.infidels.org/news/atheism/arguments.html
Yeah, too bad there's not any references. I do recognize a number of those quotes from over the years. All of them read as typical hate-mongering spewing out from fundalmentalists. |

Interestingly, if you want to know how apologetics reconcile, go to the Skeptic's Annotated Bible, pick a topic (oh let's say genesis). At the bottom they, in the spirit of intellectual honestly, list xstian sites that have responses to the skeptic claims. There you can see some real "rationalizations"!

moakley asked:quote: Wow! Is Fred Phelps a one issue nut case?
Oh, no! Phelps is not quite a Johnny One-Note! Certainly he and his congregation/family mainly rave against homosexuality, but he's also expressed prejudice against African Americans, Canadians, Lutherans, Swedes, Finns, Americans, most other Christians, and Jews. An estimated 90 of his 100-odd Westboro Baptist Church congregants are his kin, and many of those are attorneys. He keeps his family whipped into obedience.

Wikipedia has a long, frightening article on this creature:

Thanks for that source. I'm not calling Robert Sherman a liar. George Sr. may very well have told him that in private. But I do point out that Sherman, arguably hardly a neutral reporter, seems to be the only source of that quote, so I think the attribution is weak to the point that it should not be used.

Here's documentation from Wikipedia of Fred Phelps' anti-Semitism, which I didn't have ready to hand earlier:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church#Anti-semitism.2FAnti-Judaismquote: Anti-semitism/Anti-Judaism
Second only to WBC's anti-homosexual picketing is their anti-Jewish stance.
Phelps refers to the Holocaust as "minuscule" and led a protest at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. in 1996, proclaiming:
Whatever righteous cause the Jewish victims of the 1930s-40s Nazi Holocaust had... has been drowned in sodomite semen. American taxpayers are financing this unholy monument to Jewish mendacity and greed and to filthy fag lust. Homosexuals and Jews dominated Nazi Germany...The Jews now wander the earth despised, smitten with moral and spiritual blindness by a divine judicial stroke...And god has smitten Jews with a certain unique madness...Jews, thus perverted, out of all proportion to their numbers energize the militant sodomite agenda...Jews are the real Nazis.
Also in 1996, Phelps began a campaign called "Topeka's Baptist Holocaust", whereby he attempted to draw attention to attacks perpetuated against WBC picketers, saying that they were not random but organized attacks orchestrated by Jews and homosexuals. Phelps announced, "Jews killed Christ", and:
Fag Jew Nazis are worse than ordinary Nazis. They've had more experience. The First Holocaust was a Jewish Holocaust against Christians. The latest Holocaust is by Topeka Jews against Westboro Baptist Church.
In another statement, he said:
Topeka Jews today stir up Kansas tyrants in persecuting Westboro Baptists. They whine about the Nazi Holocaust, while they perpetrate the Topeka Holocaust.
WBC was present at a 2002 Holocaust memorial dedication in Topeka, proclaiming "God Hates Reform Judaism". (flier)
During the 2004 United States presidential election, Phelps campaigned against United States Senator John Kerry, claiming that his affiliation with Judaism made him unfit to run the country, and on his webpage gave a lengthy recitation of Kerry's family tree, naming all of his Jewish ancestors.
A sampling of WBC's fliers regarding Judaism can be found at the ADL's website.

I don't see any quotes that stand out as fakes. I don't recognize a lot of the people but of those I do I believe most of these if not all are indeed accurate. I've heard all of the Judge Moore, Santorum, Coulter and Bush Jr quotes personally over the airwaves.
I've heard Randall Terry, Falwell, Robertson, Buchannan Helms, Ashcroft and Schlessinger at least make similar statements.
Besides the Bush Sr quote, which others are suspect? |

I agree that most of the quotes without much doubt are accurate. Maybe all of them are. I recall having read several of them before, myself. These are generally a very vile bunch of hate-spouting people. Still, in such a compilation, not a single quote should be used without a citation of source. Citations would only strengthen the list's impact.
I don't know of any, other than the Bush Sr. quote I mentioned, that I would specifically question, but I would always advise people to be wary of quotes without sources. I would have been more satisfied with the use of the Bush Sr. quote, if it had just been attributed to Robert Sherman, for instance.

Thanks for the reference, Gorgo. It's fascinating reading, and it convinced me the original quote was correct. George Sr. does seem to have a real problem with accepting atheists as fellow citizens, ie, he's a bigot on the subject. I now even begin to vaguely recall some of the incidents referred to.
It makes me wish all the more that citations were given in the American Taliban list, however.
