I first concidered this pic for the humour forum, but because there is not much humour about racist/nazist ideology I decided to put it here instead.
The picture was taken at a white-supremacist march in the Swedish city of Växjö in 1985, where a demonstrator get his come-uppance.
Picture is from the photographer's web site: http://www.hansrunesson.se/ and was published in the daily tabloid Expressen.
What happened next?
According to wittnesses of the event, after the demonstrator got hit in the head, he turned around to face the lady. He then stretched out his arm in the typical Hitler salute, yelled "sieg heil", the turned around and continued on his way as if nothing happened.

It's a genuine lady, though not of Nordic descent. More Central European, probably Polish or Chekoslovakian. The lighting and contrast of the picture isn't optimal, most likely it's shadow playing tricks on you. |

I don't think coolness-under-fire has anything to do with it.
There's a Swedish word "överslagshandling" (Please Hawks, help me out!). I can't find it in any dictionary.
It relates to psychology of both humans and animals. When faced with a situation that the animal is not equipped to handle, suddenly starts doing something completely different. A bird facing its own image in the mirror and looks behind the mirror to see nothing there, suddenly starts cleaning its feathers. A car comes up behind yours, but the stressed female driver cannot overtake you because of traffic. Suddenly you see her fixing her hair in her rear-view mirror instead. I bet you've seen this one, Filthy: A rat is dropped into a cage as food for a snake. The rat freaks out and tries to escape, only to end up with something non-sensical: cleaning itself. Rabbits chased out of its normal accustomed territory by a predator. Suddenly it gets stressed by the unfamiliar scenery, and starts to double back (pretty much to its own doom).
I guess this "sieg heil" from the skinhead was just such an act. |

Wish I could help you, Mab. It's just that I've never encountered the swedish word before - and i don't know an english one either. You've explained what you meant pretty well, though. |

I love that lady for bopping the Nazi skinhead!
That "överslagshandling" word looks to be harder to translate than the German word, "schadenfreude". The several translation sites I know either don't do Swedish, or do but don't know "överslagshandling".

Hmm. Mab, I honestly can say this is a concept I've never heard articulated before--this "panic-induced irrational calmness"--and I'm fairly certain there is no English equivalent for such a word. I guess I have heard similar stories of people doing strange things under extreme stress, usually by acting in a bizarrely composed manner. You see it sometimes in horror movies--some women covered in blood who just saw her boyfriend's head cut off sitting and serenely singing a lullaby, for instance.

Yes, fascinating indeed, but I can hardly see why the neo-Nazi would fall in a panic-induced calmness just because he was hit by a respectable and reasonably old lady. To me it's more like the skinhead didn't find her worthy of a physical reaction and just resorted to provoke her further. You know how those people are cocky. |

Agreein' with Siberia. The clown in question just wasn't under all that much stress, even if the lady did have a moustach. At least that is the way it appears in the picture.
Extreme stress can do funny things, as noted. Like soldiers who can't shoot in a firefight, for example. I've known 1 of these; it wasn't that he couldn't pull the trigger, but that he couldn't let it go until the rifle was empty. I don't know what finally became of him -- he might be on The Wall.
