In response to a posters comment in a different forum about cannibalism I did a search in the Bible on that subject.....
What the Bible says about Cannibalism Sometimes God forces people to eat other people, often their own children or other family members.
"I also will do this unto you... You shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it." -- Leviticus 26:16
"And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat." -- Leviticus 26:29
"And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters." -- Deuteronomy 28:53
"And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them." -- Deuteronomy 28:57
"Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother. And he shall on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm." -- Isaiah 9:19-20
"And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own , as with sweet wine." -- Isaiah 49:26
"And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend." -- Jeremiah 19:9
"Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers." -- Ezekiel 5:10
"I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another." -- Zechariah 11:9
Sometimes the Bible just reports, often with apparent relish, cases of cannibalism.
"This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow. So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him." 2 Kings 6:28-29
"The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat." -- Lamentations 4:10
"Who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron." -- Micah 3:2-3
"Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned. Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed. She hath wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire. -- Ezekiel 24:10-12

Mmmm. The other white meat....
Cannibalism, ceremonial and subsistence, is as old as our species and doubtless dates well before it. Ancient bones have been found broken in such a way as to get at the marrow, yum!. And ceremonial cannibalism persists today in some primitive societies.
I have read that shortly following WW-II, human meat was often found for sale in Germany, clearly demonstrating that none of are as civilized as we might want to believe.

It would have take to long to put each Bible verse in the OP so I just cut and pasted from the web site None the lest these verses ARE in the Bible.
If I may ask....Are you a Christian by chance? |

Yeah, they are in the Bible, but they are taken completely out of written and historical context on both the website and in what you posted here. Neither Christians or Jews have ever practiced cannibalism, so citing those references out of context (and therefore twisting what they mean) is just a form of pathetic Christian-bashing.

For giggles, I looked up Leviticus 26. Here is the context:
quote:
Lev 26:13 I [am] the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright. Lev 26:14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; Lev 26:15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, [but] that ye break my covenant:
Basically, if you don't do what god says,
"And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat."
So, the writers here were trying to make a point about not following their god. This does not mean that this actually happened. Methinks that was one of the most terrible things they could imagine, so they put it in there as a deterrant.
BTW, Leviticus is a lovely piece of writing and really shows off the OT version of god. |

You can look up the context here in this search page from the Skeptic's Annotated Bible. I looked for "eat the flesh" in the KJ version.
But I'm not sure what's the point of this thread. It isn't any secret the Bible is full of excuses for 'God's children to be cruel. Lot screws his daughters and blames them, 'God's' children kill every man woman and child of the Amanites and take their land... The examples are numerous. |

I think the point of this thread is to bash Christians. It always amazes me when people blatantly ignore all the Christian theology done by actual Biblical scholars that do not interpret the Bible literally. If we want to make a judgement about the beliefs and ethics of Christians, we have to consider all Christians, not just the fundamentalists. (And hell - the fundamentalists don't even commit cannibalism, so what the hell does that have to do with anything?) |

Actually, Marf, I can't find much in the Bible that really says anything like what most Christians claim is in there. Obviously they don't all advocate bashing gays with clubs, but frankly, I find the ideal Christian mostly a myth of wishful thinking. |

No the point of this thread is to show that the Bible is not the "perfect word of God".

When it not interpreted literally then who is to say what verse means what?

I've used the cannibalism assault on more than one occasion. It wasn't to show that christians were cannibals, it was to show that their god would actually threaten them with some twisted punishments.
As far as bashing only the fundamentalist xians, I think there is a fairly good reason for this. I've met some intelligent xians who would always agree with me that religion should not pressure government. That morals based on religious teachings do not belong in law or in schools. They've agreed that religion in any form has no place in science class. There's little to bash here. Sure, we still see them as a bit insane for believing this stuff at all, but, I can't bring myself to actually attack them with bible verses when their silly beliefs don't impact my life.
Now, the fundies, they are a different story. They try to control the lives of everyone around them. They interpret their bibles in the ways that best suit their agendas. They try to force religion into schools, into the government, and into our personal lives. These are the people we retaliate against the most. It's not that we fear a debate with intellectuals, it's that we generally end up agreeing with them on the important stuff.
On topic, have you guys heard about Hufu? |
