And they're supposed to protect us.

Another shining example of how George Bush is returning morality to the Executive branch.

Chippewa briefly touched on it -- the topic that is, not the girl/cop -- in this thread.

The really foul part of it all is that this is probably not the first time this scumbag has done it. He might well have been a full-fledged, paedophilic predator for years and gotten away with it until now. I would not be surprised to see other charges laid against him as people come forward with their stories.

It has begun, I think, the unraveling of the Republican oligarchy and their sick fantasies of total dominance. But it has a long ravel to go yet, so keep hoardin' them canned goods and ammunition....

How does the Bush administration fit into this story exactly? You guys need to take off your Blue glasses, they are a bit thick.

Pattern of abuses.

The Bush Administration has rubberstamped individuals without properly vetting them, the Homeland Security department is a giant boondoggle, and now this.

I also note that the President vowed in 2000 that he would bring dignity back into the executive branch.

So the Admin ok'ed this guy personally? Do you know other molesters who advertise the fact in their resumes? It seems a big jump to blame anyone other than this guy...

This type of reactionary behavior is what people like Bill O'riely use against us, it isnt productive.

Except that his job comes with a security clearance. These are far more invasive vettings than normal and usually entails a psychiatric workup. It is the administration's job to properly vet candidates. They have a history of not doing so.

I also found it ironic that this was the administration that was supposed to restore morals.

More than one....

The other Homeland Security official charged with a sexual offense involving a girl is veteran administrator Frank Figueroa, 49, the ICE special agent in charge of the agency's operations in central and northern Florida. Figueroa, who also ran the agency's El Paso, Texas, office, has pleaded not guilty to charges he exposed and fondled himself to a teenage girl last year at a mall in Tampa.

While it would be nice to think that vetting procedures would catch all those with serious psychological aberrations, it is unrealistic to expect they will. Someone who is unaware of their problem may well get spotted. However, someone quite willing to deceive in order to slip through is very likely to be able to do so.

I think it's a little unfair to hold an organisation directly responsible for the behaviour of it's members, unless it specifically encourages or condones that behaviour. More important, in my opinion, will be the organisations response to the discovery of such behaviour.

Disclaimer: I know almost nothing about the individuals and parties involved in these matters. I certainly don't support any particular US political party.

My comments come from an outsiders (and sceptics) viewpoint. I have worked for both defence and law enforcement organisations here in Australia. I've had various clearance levels, and while I can't comment on any background investigation of me that may have happened without my knowledge, I can say that based on what I have been through, it probably wouldn't be difficult for someone to intentionally provide a passable facade of acceptable behaviour and beliefs. Even well designed psychological profiling tools are often very subjective.

John's just this guy, you know.

Honestly how many people have you ever met and thought , 'Gee, Id better make sure hes/shes not a child molester', besides maybe your child care provider?

How exactly does one find out this before hand? And does the Admin really choose the fouth in line for the press secretary's job or did you just assume that?

Working in healthcare, background checks are a given for any position you hold that may bring you in contact with patients.

I see the administration being more than one man. Bush picket the dept heads. The dept heads picked this guy. Bush and his cabinet comprise the administration.

However, I can see the skeptic contention that a vetting process could be thwarted by a sociopathic or experienced person.

Yes but would a backgroud check be able to pick up this information, not likely.

All Im saying is that there is ten million legit reasons to bitch at the Admin, but this isnt one of them.
