Send me $20, Cune, and I'll promise not to tell your mother you just called her a fossil.

The story of human evolution has always been most intriguing to me. Not unlike the study of evolution, paleontology and archeology in general, it's a who-done-it story filled with twists and turns that rival any great mystery novel. There are thrills and spells and heroes and villains. There was Raymond Dart and his odd little fossil skull. There was the great Don Johanson vs. the Leakey family feud over Johansons description of A. Afarensis. There was the Piltdown hoax. And yet through it all we have one of the most comprehensive examples of evolution by way of a surprisingly wonderful fossil record, as well as support from other scientific disciplines.

For some fun on the subject, I recommend a visit to Becoming Human, presented by the Institute of Human Origins.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

For the simple reason that no one else has mentioned them, I feel compelled to bring up "Darwin's finches". During periods of drought, there is fewer small seeds for Geospiza fortis to eat, but relatively speaking more large seeds. This has the effect of killing off smaller birds (with smaller beaks) during droughts, leading to a shift to birds with larger beaks in the population. Beak size is genetically determined and thus this represents evolution by natural selection.

D'oh! Hell-- I'm insulted that I've implied that I myself am a fossil. But since I haven't spawned, I'm not transitional at least!
