For the simple reason that no one else has mentioned them, I feel compelled to bring up "Darwin's finches". During periods of drought, there is fewer small seeds for Geospiza fortis to eat, but relatively speaking more large seeds. This has the effect of killing off smaller birds (with smaller beaks) during droughts, leading to a shift to birds with larger beaks in the population. Beak size is genetically determined and thus this represents evolution by natural selection. |
