I guess the other extreamist sects are feeling a bit mifed that the Moslems are getting all the attention lately, what with September 11 and the recent series suicide bombings in Isreal. There was a story in the Charlotte Observer a few days ago about a couple of members of the Jewish Defense League who were arrested for conspiring to blow up a Los Angeles mosque and a U.S. representative of Lebanese descent.
One just has to wonder what exactly that they thought this was going to accomplish? The bigger question of course is this: does extreamist religion turn people into assholes or do assholes just naturally gravitate to extreamist religion?

I don't think there's a good answer to that. I've known both types. The asshole who gravitates to extremism I tend to ignore as hopeless. Probably not someone I'd care to know anyway. I guess the first type bothers me more. I've known people who seemed nice, stable, and critical-thinking. Then they find that old time religion. Naturally, their next step is to annoy everyone into believing the same way they do. Its too bad about the people mentioned in the article. In the past, the JDL has done some good work, now they'll be lumped in with the rest of the loonies. Lisa

The people who follow the extreme religions seem to be bring up their kids that way ......who can forget the kids in Afghanistan lauging and dancing in the streets (with their mothers) after Sept 11th....It really is a form of child abuse.
However your upbringing and what you are surrounded by has a huge influence in how you turn out as an adult (thank god I had sane parents). If you are surrounded by hatred and guns from day dot, the chances of you growing up that way are pretty damn good I reckon.

Well, in fairness to the JDL, I guess I should mention that, according to the article, the plot was foiled because another JDL member they approached about participating turned them in. So I guess not everyone in the organization shares the extreamist views of the conspirators. Still, with the events of the last couple of months, I find myself a lot less tolerant of religious groups and am quite willing to let the burden of proof fall on them to show that they aren't loonies.
