The leader of the Chechen jihadi separatists, Shamil Basayev, has been assassinated with a bomb placed by Russian agents, according to Russia. But others are saying that a truck in Basayev's convoy loaded with explosives simply blew up by accident. Basayev was the Chechen warlord who took responsibility for the massacre 331 people, mainly school children, in Beslan in 2004.

The "official" Pravda version is here. This is CNN's take .

Siranaha, you sack of shit child killer.

They should make this a national holiday in Russia.

Sometimes I wish there really was a hell for people like this.

If I was the Supreme Being, I wouldn't muck about with butterflies and dandelions, I'd start with lasers, eight o'clock, Day One!

Wikipedia has already updated its entry for Shamil Basayev. There's a lot of detail in it on this bloody terrorist's career.

With the Bush administration's failure to catch Osama (largely due to moving Special Forces troops from Afghanistan to Iraq just before the battle of Tora Bora), it's not hard to upstage us, unfortunately. And now, they've shut down the CIA office dedicated to tracking him down. I do not take the conspiracists' position that Bush helped Osama with 9/11, but there is more than a hint that this administration might actually find it preferable to keep him alive now.

So much of their political betting, their moves toward toltalitarianism, are based upon having Osama around as a Devil to rally against. In George Orwell's 1984, after the government arrested him, Winston Smith was told about the Resistance movement he'd joined, words to the effect, "If the Resistance didn't exist, we'd have to create it."

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Göring during the Nuremberg Trials

I don't know, I would imagine they'd like that blot on their record of incompetence removed.

That's possible, too. We're in the realm of guesswork when trying to figure out this Presidency's motives. The perspective of history usually makes such things clear. I hope we all have a future from which to look back and examine what's going on.
