I forget what state it was (LA?). State legislators trying to backdoor creationism into the classroom were quoting this guy. This was also an item on Skeptic News. Seems the good Doc was helping to draft the bill. They were eventually called out, but how scary is it that Dr. Dino is trying to get involved in educations America's kids. Sleep well, everyone! Lisa

Arkansas, Lisa.
Here's a interesting link to various creationist's credentials, including Hovind's matchbook diploma.
Kent Hovind is a young-earth creationist who gives frequent public lectures on evolution and creationism. He is well-known for repeating the claim that the remains of a basking shark found by Japanese fishermen off the coast of New Zealand were actually those of a recently deceased plesiosaur. Hovind claims to possess a masters degree and a doctorate in education from Patriot University in Colorado. According to Hovind, his 250-page dissertation was on the topic of the dangers of teaching evolution in the public schools. Formerly affiliated with Hilltop Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Patriot University is accredited only by the American Accrediting Association of Theological Institutions, an accreditation mill that provides accreditation for a $100 charge. Patriot University has moved to Alamosa, Colorado and continues to offer correspondence courses for $15 to $32 per credit. The school's catalog contains course descriptions but no listing of the school's faculty or their credentials. Name It and Frame It lists Patriot University as a degree mill [3].
Here's a funny little tidbit: Case of the Month
In Re Hovind, 197 B.R. 157 (Bankr. N.D. Fla. 1996)
Debtor Kent E. Hovind was a tax protester who filed a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Petition after the IRS had seized three vehicles, a homemade trailer, and $54 in cash. Mr. Hovind had never filed a tax return (the IRS had filed them on his behalf), did not acknowledge that he was a citizen of the U.S. nor subject to its tax laws, and claimed that he was was "an evangelist employed by God". On his bankruptcy schedules, he declared that he had no property, received no income, had no expenses, and had no creditors (except for the IRS, which filed a claim for $10,690 in unpaid taxes). In finding that Mr. Hovind had filed false schedules, the Court noted that he had a home with recently installed central air conditioning, and sent all three children to a private Christian school at a cost of $4,800 per year. Under these facts, the Court had no difficulty in holding that the petition was filed in bad faith, and that he was ineligible for Chapter 13 relief under 11 U.S.C. Section 109(e) because he had no income. "The evidence presented at the hearing paints a clear portrait of a tax protester whose sole purpose in seeking relief under Chapter 13 was to obtain the release of property seized by the IRS." His petition was therefore dismissed.
Arf!

Scroll down to "Free College Degrees". "Dr." Hovind? Heck, I see several I think I'd qualify for! Also, over in the "Fan Mail" section, there's a letter about Dr. Dino. There's a link to a picture of the split-level where he received his diploma. Sorry I got the state wrong. I tried running a couple of searches, but my computer is being less cooperative than usual today. Lisa

I was just checking out the links, and Hovind is saying that he is offering 250,000 bucks if someone can prove Evolution. (Easy, descent with modification, any Amish farmer who breeds cows has seen evolution) So what kind of crazy parameters has he set up, because I would really like that 250K.

We used to have a parody of an offer like this here. The offer that was parodied was set up so that it was impossible to claim the prize. They basically had some fail safe conditions in the small print that more or less said that they could change the rules at any time.
