'As for the military's diversity, Blum said, the battlefield might be the greatest equalizer. "Agnostics, atheists and bigots suddenly lose all that when their life is on the line," Blum said. "Something that they lived their whole life believing gets thrown out the door, and they grasp the comrade next to them, and they don't care what color their skin is, and they don't care where they pray. They just care,'Can you save them? Can I trust you? Are you going to cover my back? Are you going to get me out of this?'"'

Well, it looks like Blum could use some putting his life on the line of his own then. Perhaps that would make him less of a bigot… |

Maybe General Blum had a lousy speechwriter. I think, but can't know, that he meant to say that race and religion become irrelevant to soldiers joined as comrades in combat. This would both directly contradict and be more accurate than the usual "no atheists in foxholes" canard. But Blum's statement comes out sounding as though he might have meant to paint "agnostics, atheists and bigots" with the same tarred brush. Makes one wonder how confused this guy's thinking in general is.
