I had a Black & Tan the other night. It does adequately dilute the Guiness to drinkability, but I noticed something else. Guiness really has no flavor aside from bitterness.

I've always thought that Guinness has an aftertaste with distinct overtones of soy sauce (the brewed kind, not the hydrolyzed soy protein concoction you get with Chinese take-out).

Not a bad, er, characterization. I guess there's something similar to soy used in the brewing process. Anyway, right now I am drinking a Sierra Nevada Stout and I have to say, it's not unenjoyable. I'd say it's not nearly as stout as some other stouts.
