Fred is a Baptist preacher, pastor of Westboro BC in Topeka, Kansas. He is unpopular even among Baptists for his extraordinarily single-minded crusade against gay rights, or, indeed, against the continued existence of gays.
Among other things, the Phelpers picket gay funerals (including that of murder victim Matthew Shephard), call names (former Canadian Prime Minister Joe Clark is a "fag panderer"), and keep a running count of how long Shepard has been in hell.
They apparently have the funds to travel all over North America in their service to God. Scheduled protests include one at the commencement services of Ferndale High School in Bellingham, Washington where an avowed lesbian was elected prom king. I thought this was rather amusing. Fred and his gang are not amused: they call the girl a "filthy beast" etc. Unbelievable? See for yourself:

How sad. I happened upon an article at www.secularhumanism.org about the bible and homosexuality. One really good point was that there are dozens of rules and laws given by God in Leviticus, including forbidding homosexuality (though it possibly only means to forbid homosexual acts not commited through love), but that most of them have been discarded by true believers. Why not discard the rules about homosexuality?

In a similar vein, Boulder HS in Colo chose to remove the photo of two lesbians sharing their first kiss and show only heterosexual couples. The students at BHS scheduled a kiss-in in front of the school to protest the removal of the picture from the YB.
BHS officials report that it was in deference to the larger number of hetero that would buy the book.
Yeah, remember this guy from the Shepard trial. I had to leave the room when they gave him air time on the news.

The "Rev" Phelps and his lovely church members are such charming and loving Xians, aren't they?
Here's a question for you: If Fred and his minions are the perfect candidates for heaven, wouldn't you consider heaven to really be hell?

I had heard of this group, and of course saw them protesting when the scum who murdered Sheppard were on trial, but I'd never gone to their site before.
This is some sick, sick stuff here. Why on earth do people feel they need to foment hate to make themselves look better. A family is grieving the loss of a beloved son, and these idiots are standing around patting each other on the back. Do they really think that anyone who doesn't believe exactly as they do should be offed? For some reason, I actually felt dirty after going to that site. Sort of like I'd just walked through an ill-kept barnyard.

Jerks live with jerks (themselves) 24 hours a day and cannot escape. How awful to be a jerk and to be surrounded with such self-imposed hatred continuously.

Sadly, these jerks seem to feel they are NOT jerks, and actually believe their deplorable actions are justified. This is the reason I fear dogmatics of any kind: they are quite capable of doing anything to those who do not fit in their world view. I believe this is called sociopathy.

Of course, you are right. However, I leave a wide berth for these nuts. I do nothing to set them off, because most of them are, indeed, potentially dangerous weirdos. Therefore, I am not going to permit myself to become a martyr, and I simply try to offer them no reason to focus solely upon me. Then again, they can be very, very dangerous to others. I simply step aside to let them pass.
But, as I said, you are very, very right!

Can you imagine all the good these people could do if they channelled that energy into something worthwhile? No, instead they rant and rave about stuff which is, quiet frankly none of their business. They must lead very sad, bitter lives.
I get very nervous around people who claim to speak for a deity.

Me thinks the Reverend Phelps and his kin doth protest too much...
Here's something to think about: Whenever someone protests with such vehemence and hate against something, they are usually secretly attracted to the very thing they claim to abhor. Hmmmm - makes you wonder about the Rev. Phelps, doesn't it?
Seriously, I feel physically ill after reading just a few articles on Phelps' website. How can anyone harbor so much hate in their hearts without eventually acting on it in a violent way? Hopefully, they're keeping an eye on the fertilizer purchases of this deranged 'toon.
