Does anyone actually do this anymore? I can't remember the last time I made a New Year's resolution. When there's something about myself that I feel needs "fixing", I just try to do it. When I retired last April, I realized that baggy BDUs hide a multitude of sins. So I set about dropping 20 pounds. Should I have waited until 01 Jan 2002?
The worst thing I've noticed about New Year's resolutions is that people almost invariably set themselves up for failure. One slip-up on the resolve, and they're convinced they're losers.
So what's the deal? Is it too many well-seasoned egg nogs that make people say "this year I'm gonna...."

Agree with all of that. It's been years since I even bothered to think of anything I'd want to do or tought I could keep a promise of on a set date. I think it's just a human interest story for the 6 o'clock news.

However, there is something about 'starting over'. The Chinese and I think the Jews too, have this tradition where they 'clean up' things before the new year, like paying off old debts, etc.

You might notice that many retail outlets are really starting to push diet and exercise products. Grocery stores putting SlimFast on sale and whatnot...

I resolve to stop resolving. Is that possible?

I agree with Lisa if something needs fixing, why wait for some mystic date to do so. I do plan to quit smoking, but only because I have a baby on the way, I will quit when I am ready. Not Jan 1st

Rabbit food? Don't rabbits eat anything???

but seriously...Jan 1 is such a silly date for resolutions. A more significant day for an individual is their birthday and not the arbitrarily chosen day we call the first of the year.

I do firmly resolve not to be snake-bitten again this year!

The 'New Year's Resolutions' is a quaint tradition that, if not world wide, is pretty common among many cultures. Many (most?) merely put lip service to it: quit smoking / drinking / pigging-out, and so forth. They know ain't likely to happen.

But, I think it is a neat tradition, none the less. "Cleaning up" is always a good idea.

I further resolve to not start snortin' coke or shootin' up this year! Unlike the former, I've been so successful with this one, I like to keep it going.

luck,

f

Funny you mentioned that. I was watching the 0200 news (early or late for 1800 news, depending on how you look at it) and sure enough, they were running a story on New Year's resolutions. Many said that as the new year starts, they'll start being nicer to everyone. ?????? Does this mean they only have 2 days to continue knocking down little old ladies on the sidewalk? Going to quit beating the kids at 2359 on the 31st?

LOL. That's like the joke about new and improved products as if the old ones weren't working, and we were wasting our money buying them.
I was just thinking, perhaps you didn't mean this to be a serious subject but if you think about it, people are such fools, following what everyone else does and not thinking for themselves.
You are all right, why does there have to be a universal date to do something! And it goes beyond that, why are people caught up in it? Or why are they caught up in anything they don't think through (logicaly)....like religion or what the government is doing (at any given time).

Now, Atomic, let's not talk about birthdays (particularly about counting them)!

Anyway, I have never, ever made a list of resolutions, at New Year's or on any other day. In this way I have avoided the pain of failing to live up to resolutions.

Oh, heck, what can one possibly do to improve upon perfection???

Folks, Ed has decided that on New Year's eve, he will have his last cigarette. Naturally, he wants me to join him. We both know it will be tougher for me. Let's just say I'm wound a tad tighter than he is. We could also say nervous, jumpy, high-strung, and a bitch on wheels, but we won't, okay? I'll try, I really will. But I'm sure all of you will be very understanding if my replies consist of "Fuck You" for a while.

Best of luck to the both of you, Lisa!

My take on the resolution bit: rather than make a New Year's resolution on 31 Dec and break it a few days later, I can decide something in my life needs changing at any time -- and *then* avoid doing anything about it

THIS YEAR I VOW TO GAIN 10 LBS AND LOSE EVERY TIME I PLAY THE LOTTERY

I can't seem to keep the ones I make other years, so if the trend continues, I'll be lighter and richer by this time next year!

I agree that when its time for a change, a person should make that change. Why wait for Jan 1?

LOL. Your're an OK guy Badger.
Now why didn't I think of the lotto thing. The weight seems to be doing it's own thing with or without a resoultion. Perhaps I sould resolve to gain 20 pounds for better results. Thanks for the suggestion.
