Back when I was a lad, we had nine planets, and didn't have any fancy-schmancy space rockets. We had to walk to every damned one of them. Uphill. In both directions.
I'd learned the planets this way (I think Heinlein provided this one): Mother Very Thoughtfully Made A Jam Sandwich Under No Protest. "Thoughtfully" was for Terra, and "A" was for Asteroids.

Sorry, but I don't think any of us here will live long enough to see "never."

This from a group that doesn't remember it's own history. Pluto wasn't part of Astology as far back as the 70's. It was considered irrelevant because a mere 40 years earlier, it was completely unknown.
Somebody hasn't been talking to the old astrologers.

I can name the planets but I could never remember the mnemonic anyway. |

It's very easy, B! You, too can learn the mnemonic phrase! Remarkably, mnemonics itself can help you, as it fortunately works both ways: Mercury = Mother, Venus = very, Terra = thoughtfully, Mars = made, Asteroids = a, Jupiter = jam, Saturn = sandwich, Uranus = under, Neptune = no, Pluto = protest.
And Bob's your uncle, Guv'nor! Unfortunately, that's now an obsolete mnemonic.

The Calgary CBC AM radio station is running a phone in contest for a new mnemonic. They had this entry:
Men Vigorously Enjoy Making Juicy Sounding Underarm Noises.
The anouncer thought this would be popular with 10 year old boys.

Now, the protests begin:quote: Pluto demotion draws protest POSTED: 9:09 a.m. EDT, September 2, 2006
Al Tombaugh, the son of Pluto founder Clyde Tombaugh, attends a pro-Pluto rally Friday.
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (AP) -- Size doesn't matter.
That was the message as friends and colleagues of the late Clyde Tombaugh, the astronomer who discovered Pluto, gathered on the New Mexico State University campus to protest the International Astronomical Union's recent decision to strip Pluto of its status as a planet.
About 50 students and staff members turned out Friday for the good-natured challenge. Some were wearing T-shirts and carrying signs that read "Protest for Pluto" and "Size Doesn't Matter."
Tombaugh's widow, Patricia, and their son, Al Tombaugh, also participated.
NMSU astronomer Bernie McNamara told the crowd that textbooks shouldn't be rewritten.
"Why not? Because the debate is not over," McNamara said.
