Do you realize whenever you post a link to a website that you dislike, you are actually helping that website, especially when you provide content that includes keywords that site tagets?
Google comes along and crawls this site. You wrote "Creationism is a a big hooie. God did not make this world, we evolved. The Bilbe has it wrong. This site on creationism is hooie.
Google sees: creation[ism] God evolved bible creation[ism].... Google sees the site link and assumes that this site has some merit on the above keywords.
A very big oversimplification, but something to consder if you don't want a site to garner more atention.

I agree if anything we are putting this site in google's repertoir and when people search creationism this site comes up also. People tend to look for corroborating evidence rather than contradictory anyway, so they will find someone if not the site we list in any case. After all most of the arguments for creationism, alternative medicine, and conspiracy theories are the same on all the sites. |

There is an argument that outgoing links also add merit to the site hosting the links. Linking is what the web is all about. Withholding links is like withholding evidence because you think it could damage your case. I don't think we have much to fear when it comes to creationism.

On the general theory, I concur with @tomic. I get into a lot of scraps with trolls, CTers, and pedants who refuse to post evidence or links, and it's beyond annoying. It kills the debate or reduces it to finger-pointing and name-calling. If you're in an argument with a nutjob(however you so define one), the links are to show the peanut gallery and other posters how demented his source material is. If someone you lead to one of those sites, as posited by Ricky, is going to fall for their crap, then they were going to fall for it, anyway. No amount of protecting them from information is going to help.
Further, If I'm arguing with TinfoilTom and he's pretending to be normal, but I know his favorite site is this one: http://www.truthism.com/ , then I want the world to know what a whackjob he is.
BTW, you can, of course do the opposite. I think googlebombing is childish, but we use it. I won't go copy the instructions, but you can change the text on your hyperlink to read anything. T4, if you want to post a link to a debunking site, you hyperlink it then change the text so that it reads "ID is Really Cool". (I assume everyone has played the "failure" game on Google? If not, go google the word failure. This was a war between Bushies and Michael Moore. They got hundreds or thousands of people to hyperlink the word "failure" to each others' sites....)
Further, a link in an email is not going to raise a site's google count, generally. If you get a popular blog or website to put in such a link, it may do it. But unless there are thousands of messages with the same link, it's not going to raise them to No. 1 or 2 on Google. |

But, Mab! It's dishonest for us to quote someone with an edited quotation!
